Racecourse Staff

Clerk of the Course:
The official in charge of all aspects of running the actual race day

Declarations Clerk:
Based in the weighing room and to whom the trainer confirms his or her intention to run and the jockey booking on race day morning.

Racecourse Medical

Officer (RMO):
Dedicated race day doctor.

BHA Officials

Clerk of the Scales:
The person responsible for weighing the jockeys before and after the race to check the horse has carried the correct weight allocated

Handicapper:
Assesses horses and their performance and gives them a rating in order that each has an equal chance of winning.

Judge:
Official responsible for declaring the finishing order of a race and the distances between the runners.

Starter:
In charge of the horses and riders before the race and starts the race.

Stewards:
The group of people responsible for ensuring the race adheres to the Rules and Regulations of Racing.

Stipendiary Steward:
A raceday Official who acts in accordance with the provision of Rule 29

Security:
Ensures the highest level of security controlling access and reporting infringements of rules.

Vet:
The official vet that implements all veterinary aspects of the rules of racing.
