Placing Your Bet

Betting odds will be given in the form of a fraction (see sections below) unless betting on the Tote (pool betting).

When betting at a bookmaker or shop/kiosk, shop around for the best price (the price that will return the most profit) for the horse/s you have chosen. Bear in mind, each bookmaker will have a sign displaying the minimum stake he will accept.

How to Place a Bet

When placing your bet make sure you state

1) The stake you want to bet
2) The type of bet (win, place or each way etc)
3) The horse you want to bet on

The bookmaker will give you a slip (your receipt) with the details of your bet and his name on it. It is important you check this as if it is incorrect, you cannot change it once you have walked away.

When the Clerk of the Scales calls 'weigh in’, the results are final and you can collect your winnings by presenting your betting slip to the bookmaker with whom you made the bet.

To Win Bets

For win bets, divide the first number (the return) by the second number (the stake) to give you the profit for a £1 bet.

When collecting your winnings, you will also have your stake returned- see table below.

Each Way Bets

Each way bets are two separate bets on the same horse. £1 each way on horse number 4 means you want £1 stake on the horse winning, AND £1 on the horse being placed, so you pay a £2 stake. If your horse gets placed (and doesn’t win) you will get the £1 placed stake and profit as returns. If the horse wins, you will get the £1 win stake and profit, AND the £1 placed stake and profit as returns.  see table below.
