Where to bet

The Tote

The only bookmaker in Britain which is allowed to offer pool bets on horseracing. Unlike the on course bookmakers where you back a horse at a fixed price, all money bet on a race goes in to a pot which is shared out between those who have backed the winner. Tote screens indicate what the dividend per pound bet will be approximately, but you will not know until after the race how much you have won. The Tote dividends are decimal and include the pound unit stake, i.e. dividend of £6 is the same as 5/1 with a bookmaker (where you are returned your £1 stake and £5 dividend).

The on course Bookmaker

Individual or chain bookmakers found in each enclosure on a race day.

The Racecourse Betting Shop

The same as betting shops on the high street, racecourse betting shops can also take bets on other races/sports as well as the day’s racing.
