What Are Extra Place Races?

Extra Places are a feature of each-way bets, particularly in horse racing.

With each way bets, half of the stake is placed on the horse to win, and half is placed on the horse to finish in a place position.

The industry standard for place terms is 1/4 or 1/5 odds for the first two or three places, depending on the number of runners.

Bookmakers may offer extra places on selected races, which means they pay out on additional places, increasing the chances of winning and offering higher payouts.

For instance, in a 12-runner handicap race, bookmakers usually pay out each way bets if the horse finishes in the top three, but with an extra place, they would also pay out if the horse finishes fourth.

Top Bookies That Offer Extra Place Races

Here are some of the best bookmakers offering extra places racing bets in the UK:

Some bookmakers offer more Extra Places promotions than others, and not all bookmakers offer them.

For instance, Paddy Power may offer six places for the Grand National, while Betfred may offer eight places for the same race.

Also when signing up some bookies offer free bets as part of a welcome bonus – qualifying bets or a qualifying bet may apply – so always reads all terms and conditions.

Extra Places Terms and Conditions on Horse Races

  • Qualifying odds refer to the minimum odds a selection must be to qualify for the promotion. This is usually set at 1/2, although read your betting firm’s T&Cs to make sure.
  • Time is important as the most extra place offers only run after a certain point. This could be 12 pm on the day of the race or 6 pm the evening before. If you place bets outside of this time you won’t benefit from the promo.
  • The number of starters is important to keep an eye on. There must be at least the minimum number of runners going to post for the enhanced place terms deal to take effect.
  • When the bet was placed often means you must have made your gamble after the final declarations stage as ante-post bets don’t count in the extra places offered.
  • Other restrictions may include the total stake you can place each way and the extra places can’t be used alongside another promotion, such as best odds guaranteed or faller’s insurance. Again, check the terms and conditions.

Are Extra Place Offers Worth It?

Paying out on extra places increases the bettor’s chances of winning if wagering each way bets.

The additional place terms do not make any difference to punters who place win bet types only.

Many horse racing bettors who like to back a runner at a big price will see the extra place offers are very beneficial for their betting strategies.

How Do You Know How Many Places Are Being Paid On A Race?

The each-way terms available for every race will be shown at the top of the race card.

The number of placed horses and the fractional odds will be published on your bookmaker’s website or betting app.
