Famous Fairway Stakes Winners
The Fairway Stakes is named after a Newmarket-trained horse from the 1920’s owned by Lord Derby who won the St Leger, the Eclipse and the Champion Stakes. It was first run in 1998 on the July Course with victory going to Henry Cecil’s Royal Anthem. He won the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot and later added the Canadian International and the International Stakes at York.
Brian Meehan trained the winner in successive seasons with David Junior (2005) and Red Rocks (2006). David Junior had won the 2005 Champion Stakes and also won the 2006 Eclipse Stakes. He started at 25-1 in the Champion Stakes, defeating a strong field which included Rakti, Alexander Goldrun, Oratorio and Maraahel. Red Rocks famously won the Breeders’ Cup Turf in 2006, defeating the likes of Hurricane Run, English Channel and Cacique.
2007 winner Lucarno went on to win the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York and the St Leger at Doncaster. He also won the Princess of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2008. Godolphin’s Old Persian also won the York race but finished only fifth in the Leger behind Kew Gardens. In 2019 he won the Dubai City of Gold, the Dubai Sheema Classic and the Northern Dancer Stakes.
Key Fairway Stakes Trials
The Fairway Stakes tends to attract promising three-year-olds that are likely to stay a mile and a half or beyond. The race has produced a subsequent St Leger winner in Lucarno and also a Melbourne Cup winner in Green Moon (2012). The latter won here for Harry Dunlop but was sold to Lloyd Williams to be trained in Australia by Robert Hickmott. More typically, a win here opens up possibilities for the King George VI Stakes at Royal Ascot or the Great Voltigeur at York.
Fairway Stakes Betting Trends
Six of the last ten favourites have won the Fairway Stakes; Pinzolo (2014), Peacock (2015), Old Persian (2018), Raise You (2019), Volkan Star (2020) and John Leeper (2021). The longest priced winner during the same period was Grey Britain at 10-1 in 2017, trained by John Ryan and ridden by Gerald Mosse.
Fairway Stakes – Top Trainers and Jockeys
Charlie Appleby and William Buick are the combination to follow in this race with four victories apiece. Appleby won it with Pinzolo (2014), Old Persian (2018), Volkan Star (2020) and Ottoman Fleet (2022). Buick rode Old Persian and Volkan Star and was also successful aboard Thought Worthy (2012) and John Leeper (2021).
Betting on the Fairway Stakes
The Fairway Stakes has surprisingly lost its black type status, despite producing several top class performers over the years. Favourites have a good record and any entries from the powerful Charlie Appleby stable are worth noting.
