Famous Fillies’ Trial Stakes Winners

The Fillies’ Trial Stakes was formerly run as the Sandleford Priory Stakes and was sponsored by Swettenham Stud from 2002 until 2014. It has a fine record of producing Classic fillies including three winners of the Epsom Oaks.

Jeremy Tree and Steve Cauthen teamed up with Scintillate in 1979. She won the Oaks at 20-1 in the hands of Pat Eddery on rain-softened ground. Circus Plume famously won the Oaks for John Dunlop and Lester Piggott in 1984. The victory was Piggott’s 27 th Classic success. Eswarah (2005) was the most recent filly to go on and win the Epsom Classic for Trainer Michael Jarvis.

2011 winner Izzi Top carried the Helena Springfield colours to victory in the 2012 Pretty Polly Stakes and Prix Jean Romanet. She was trained by John Gosden who also won here with Winsili in 2013, subsequently successful in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood. More recently John and Thady Gosden completed the same double with Nashwa in 2022. She was the regular mount of Holly Doyle and she rode the filly to victory in the French Oaks. The race also produced an Irish Oaks winner in Sea of Class in 2018, also successful in the Yorkshire Oaks and agonisingly beaten in a photo finish to the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

Key form races for the Fillies’ Trial Stakes

The Fillies’ Trial Stakes has a fine record at producing top class fillies with victories in Classic races in England, Ireland and France. The race tends to attract unexposed fillies stepping up from maiden race success rather than those which ran in Group races at two. A decisive winner here can shake up the Epsom Oaks betting, particularly if the winner comes from one of the big Newmarket yards.

Fillies’ Trial Stakes Betting Trends

Four of the last ten favourites have won the Fillies’ Trial Stakes; Winsili (2013), Volume (2014), Queen Power (2019) and Nashwa (2022). The longest priced winner during the same spell was subsequent Oaks winner Eshaada who won here at 18-1 in 2021. We Are Ninety was a 12-1 chance when winning for Hugo Palmer in 2016.

Fillies’ Trial Stakes – Top Trainers and Jockeys

The victory of Queen Power in 2019 brought Sir Michael Stoute level with Sir Henry Cecil on 5 winners in the race. Stoute’s other winners were Knoosh (1989), Kartajana (1990), Scottish Stage (2006) and Crystal Zvezda (2015). Three jockeys share top spot on four winners apiece; Ray Cochrane, Lester Piggott and Ryan Moore.

Betting on the Fillies’ Trial Stakes

The Fillies’ Trial Stakes often produces a top class winner with Classic potential. Many are unknown quantities going into the race so it is probably a race to watch for the future rather than get too heavily involved.
