Tramore Racecourse

Overview of Tramore Racecourse

Tramore Racecourse is located just 12km west of the city of Waterford in the beachside town of Tramore.

Sporting pursuits are part of Tramore’s culture, as it remains a popular surfing and water sports destination due to its large enclosed and sheltered bay, so Tramore Racecourse is a well-attended venue by both tourists and racing fans alike.

Known for its metropolitan crowd and fantastic easygoing atmosphere, Tramore Racecourse is often frequented as people’s first Irish racing experience and its variety of amenities make for a great day out for racegoers of all passions.

Tramore Racecourse is predominantly a National Hunt venue but does host one flat racing fixture every year.

Unusually, Tramore Racecourse only operates flag starts and so horses not used to this procedure can be at a disadvantage. There’s no doubt about it: Tramore Racecourse is a challenge, but a good one and a great place to build up some winning experience for horse racing trainers and horse racing jockeys.

Tramore Racecourse History

Racing in Tramore originally took place on the beach and is documented as far back as 1785.

It wasn’t until 1911 that horseracing on the sand ended with the racecourse being built and then opening the following year.

In 1997, Tramore Racecourse was bought by a private consortium. They invested some five million euros in the development and upgrade of the venue’s facilities. As a result, the racecourse is now a popular tourist destination and is well attended through all of its eleven fixtures.

Tramore Racecourse Map

There are two courses at Tramore, the flat and the jumps course.

Tramore Flat Track

The flat course (used once a year for a race meet each August) hosts races between one mile and four furlongs and two miles in length; a tough test that requires very good balance with its tend bends.

Tramore Jumps Track

The Tramore jumps track is considered one of the trickiest in the whole of the country and is an undulating right-handed square just over seven furlongs in length.

The turns are some of the sharpest found in mainstream horseracing and have caught out even the most experienced of horses and jockeys. The most successful horses at Tramore are nimble.

The chase course has five fences with two on the hill down the back, one on both the sides and one in the short home straight. This track favours those ridden to the front or just off pace as it is difficult to make up ground from behind.

Main Races and Events at Tramore Racecourses

The biggest event in the Tramore Racecourse calendar is the annual Tramore Festival, which takes place over four days every August and has done since 1807. Running from Thursday to Sunday with three evening meetings and both National Hunt and flat events, the Tramore Festival regularly sells out and is used as a venue for various occasions including parties and anniversaries.
