Huntingdon Racecourse

Overview of Huntingdon Racecourse

Situated just 2.5km out of the market town of Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, Huntingdon is much more than just a horseracing venue – it’s a designated conservation area, too.

Huntingdon Racecourse, also known as Brampton Racecourse, is a 21.1 hectare countryside Site of Special Scientific Interest in Cambridgeshire. It sits in the flood plain of Alconbury Brook and is a neutral grassland rich in species; a rare trait for a habitat in the area. Notably, the site has the largest population of green-winged orchid in the county. Other plants include pepper-saxifrage and salad burnet. However, protected habitat spaces aside, Huntingdon Racecourse is also a functioning venue.

Huntingdon only hosts jumps racing, but that’s not to say it’s any less popular than dual-purpose courses – and indeed its reputation is so good, it’s often nominated for ‘Best Small Racecourse’ in award ceremonies covering East Anglia and the South Midlands.

In 2016, the ground staff at the course were awarded the title ‘Best in Britain’, on account of their exemplary service and commitment to excellence. The site is considered favourably amongst jump racing fans and industry insiders and is rated ‘Excellent’ as a venue by VisitEngland.

Huntingdon hosts races across 18 days, year-round.

For a smaller venue, the facilities at Huntingdon certainly pack a punch. On-site you’ll find a fine dining restaurant, a champagne and seafood bar, a drinks bar and a bistro, and on occasions and weekends, free entertainment is put on for children; making it a popular attraction for local families looking to do something different with their weekend.

Huntingdon Racecourse is owned by The Jockey Club, the largest commercial group in horseracing.

Huntingdon Racecourse History

Back in 1886, horseracing began at Brampton, starting with a three-mile steeplechase across the Easter weekend which was won by a horse called Catherine The Great.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, several courses sprung up across East Anglia, including at St Ives and Wisbech; but few survived and Huntingdon was one of the successful handful to make it.

The most dominant force at Huntingdon was, for many years, was trainer Henrietta Knight, who saddled eight winners in ten years between 1998 and 2007!

Notable horses who have raced at Huntingdon include Desert Orchid, Dublin Flyer, Remittance Man, Best Mate and Monet’s Garden.

Notable Races and Events at Huntingdon

The most prestigious race to be run at Huntingdon annually is the Peterborough Chase, held every December. A Grade 2 National Hunt Chase, the Chase is open to horses aged 4 or over and is run over two miles and four furlongs. 16 jumps are to be raced and the prize money stands at approximately £65,000.

The most successful horse at the Peterborough Chase is Edredon Bleu, who has won four times and was trained by (of course!) Henrietta Knight.

Whilst the Peterborough Chase is the most prestigious race and broadcast on Racing TV, the Boxing Day races are the best attended. Families and individuals from all over the local area flock to Huntingdon as tradition – to watch horseracing and to catch the entertainment put on!
