Patton Stakes

The Patton Stakes is a Listed race for three-year-olds at Dundalk over a mile.

It takes place in late February or early March and replaced the Loughbrown Stakes (seven furlongs) at the Curragh in 2013.

In 2018 it became part of the Road to the Kentucky Derby series. Mendelssohn won that day and followed up with a wide-margin victory in the UAE Derby, raising hopes that he could win the Kentucky Derby. Unfortunately, he trailed in a remote last at Churchill Downs.

Famous Patton Stakes Winners

Gale Force Ten won the first official running of the Patton Stakes in 2013, trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by Joseph O’Brien. He won the Group 3 Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot after finishing fourth in the French 2000 Guineas and runner-up in the Irish Guineas behind Magician.

Washington DC was another high-class winner for O’Brien in 2016, ridden by Seamie Heffernan. He became a useful sprinter, finishing second in the Prix de l’Abbaye as well as numerous other placed efforts in Group company. He did win the Group 3 Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh in 2017.

Mendelssohn had finished runner-up at 50-1 in the Dewhurst Stakes before winning the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. He won this race in 2018 before demolishing the field in the UAE Derby by 18 1/2 lengths. He never quite lived up to expectations after that astonishing performance but did finish in the frame in both the Travers Stakes and the Jockey Club Gold Cup.

Key Patton Stakes Trials

The winners of this race have come from a wide variety of backgrounds, some stepping up in class and others with proven form in the book.

The unfortunate experiences of Mendelssohn illustrate just how tough it is for a European horse to compete in the Kentucky Derby but Aidan O’Brien will doubtless continue to farm this event.

Patton Stakes Betting Trends

There have been three winning favourites in the past seven seasons; Washington DC (11-10), Mendelssohn (Evens) and Juncture (10-11). The longest-priced winner during that period was Joseph O’Brien’s My Generation at 11-2 in 2021. Mendelssohn was the highest-rated winner of the Patton Stakes in recent years on 115.

Patton Stakes – Top Trainers and Jockeys

Aidan O’Brien won the Loughbrown Stakes a record seven times and has kept up the pace since the introduction of the Patton Stakes. He leads the standings with four winners; Mendelssohn (2018), War Secretary (2017), Washington DC (2016) and Gale Force Ten (2013).

Joseph O’Brien and Ger Lyons have trained two winners apiece.

Jockeys Seamie Heffernan, Colin Keane and Shane Crosse have all won this race twice.

Betting on the Patton Stakes

Although this race comes very early in the season it has still thrown up some high-class performers.

There are unlikely to be too many Mendelssohn’s coming along but the likes of Juncture and Crossfirehurricane have gone on to perform well at listed and Group 3 level.
