Famous Rothesay Stakes Winners

The inaugural running of the Rothesay Stakes in 2016 was won by Maleficent Queen, trained by Keith Dalgleish and ridden by Phillip Makin. 2017 winner Nezwaah had been a useful three-year-old, winning the Listed Hoppings Stakes at Newcastle and finishing runner-up to Musidora Stakes winner So Mi Dar at Yarmouth.

She won the Rothesay on her first run as a four-year-old before winning the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh. Nezwaah then finished fourth behind Enable in the Yorkshire Oaks before finishing down the field in the E.P. Taylor Stakes and in the Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar. Nezwaah was trained by Roger Varian who won it for a second time with Shenanigans (2019).

Peter Chapple-Hyam’s Bharani Star won the race in 2021 having finished a respectable sixth in the Epsom Oaks in 2020. Despite her Classic form, she was sent off at 16-1 before quickening clear to beat Astadash and A La Voile. 2022 winner My Astra finished second in the Pretty Polly Stakes next time for William Haggas and a fine fourth in the Prix de l’Opera.

Varian further embellished his fine record in this event by claiming it for a third time in 2023 with Al Husn, a progressive daughter of Dubawi out of a Sea The Stars mare. She started odds-on favourite after chasing home Via Sistina in the Group 2 Dahlia Stakes at Newmarket.

Key Rothesay Stakes Trials

There are no established trials for the Rothesay Stakes, a race which is still in its infancy. The race can attract fillies and mares that have previous form in Group races and possible objectives for the winner include the Duke of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh.

Rothesay Stakes Betting Trends

Favourites have a good record in the Rothesay Stakes, winning five of the first seven renewals. Maleficent Queen (2016), Nezwaah (2017), Shenanigans (2019), My Astra (2022) and Al Husn (2023) all started clear favourite. The only shock result to date was provided by 16-1 chance Bharani Star in 2021. Four-year-olds have the best record, winning all but one of those races.

Rothesay Stakes – Top Trainers and Jockeys

Roger Varian is the trainer to follow in the Rothesay Stakes with three winners; Nezwaah (2017), Shenanigans (2019) and Al Husn (2023). All three started favourite. Keith Dalgleish won two of the first three runnings with Maleficent Queen (2016) and Euro Nightmare (2018).

Betting on the Rothesay Stakes

The Rothesay Stakes is a relatively new addition to the racing calendar but it is already clear that favourites have a fine record. With Roger Varian having already won it three times, any entries from his stable are definitely worth noting.
