The Palace of Holyroodhouse Stakes is a new handicap race restricted to three-year-olds over five furlongs at Royal Ascot.
It was added to the programme as the final race on the fourth day in 2020 and is restricted to horses rated 0-105.
The inaugural running was won by the heavily-backed Art Power who returned to Royal Ascot the following year to finish third in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

Art Power won the inaugural running off a handicap mark of 97 after being supported down to 6-4 favourite. The grey took command after two furlongs and stormed clear, his rider Silvestre de Sousa able to ease him down in the closing stages.
It was inevitable that Tim Easterby would have to step him up in class and he duly won the Group 3 Lacken Stakes at Naas. He then competed regularly at Group 1 level, finishing fourth in the Haydock Sprint Cup and the British Champions Sprint.
He got closer to Group 1 success when third to Dream Of Dreams in the 2021 Diamond Jubilee Stakes, beaten a length and three-quarters. He returned to winning ways in the Group 3 Renaissance Stakes at the Curragh, his first victory over six furlongs.
The second running in 2021 was won by Significantly, trained by Karl Burke and ridden by Clifford Lee. He started at 10-1 after having been beaten in his previous three starts. However, all three of those defeats came against horses who would pass the post first at Royal Ascot 2021.
Rohaan won the Wokingham Stakes, Creative Force won the Jersey Stakes and Dragon Symbol finished first in the Commonwealth Cup, although he was later controversially disqualified. Significantly returned to Ascot for his next start and won by a short-head off a 4lbs higher handicap mark.
It is too soon to highlight any significant trials for the Holyroodhouse Stakes. Art Power had won a novice race at Hamilton Park on his previous start. Coincidentally, Significantly also ran at the Scottish track last time out, winning the Tangerine Trees Conditions Stakes.
The first two winners successfully followed up so the early indications are that the form is worth following. Art Power proved himself a Group horse and was very competitive at the highest level. Significantly managed to finish a close fourth in a Group 3.

Similarly, it is impossible to identify trends based on two renewals. Air Power was a very well supported favourite after winning so easily on his previous start. Significantly started at 10-1 in a field of 25. They were officially rated 97 and 92 respectively.

The first two runnings went to northern trainers in Tim Easterby (Air Power) and Karl Burke (Significantly). It is too early to say whether this will become a trend but the top northern yards are traditionally strong in the sprint handicap division. Silvestre de Sousa rode the inaugural winner with Clifford Lee aboard 2021 winner Significantly.
