How Many Racecourses Are There in The UK?

There are 59 flat and national hunt racecourses in the United Kingdom.

The 59 UK racecourses are spread from Perth up in Scotland to Newton Abbot down in Devon.

Seventeen of these UK racecourses are called dual-purpose, meaning that they provide both flat and jumps meetings.

All these 59 racecourses are included and reviewed in our list of British racecourses above (including English racecourses, Welsh racecourses, and racecourses in Scotland).

We have a separate page dedicated to horse racing courses in Ireland.

The map below highlights all the current horse racing courses in the UK and is our comprehensive map list of British racecourses.

UK Racecourses Map

The map of UK racecourses below was designed by Pete Owen, and our team purchased this poster because it provided a great visual representation of all the British Racecourses on a map of the UK.

The list of UK racecourses is in alphabetical order (A-Z) and features pins on a map of the United Kingdom to indicate the location of each horse racing track.

The A-Z UK Horse Racing racecourse map makes it easy when looking for “horse racing near me” to find the closest British racecourse to where you live.

Extra Features in Our Racecourses UK Guides

A day at the races is a fantastic day out, but it’s also fun to back a winner or two. Some of our racecourse guides may be able to assist you, as they examine the differences and unique challenges of each horse racecourse. Some horses excel on flat, surfaced racecourses and galloping tracks, but find it more challenging on undulating or tight horse racing tracks in the UK.

The horse race course guides may therefore help you identify ‘horses for courses’ as the old saying goes!

Our horse racetrack guides may also identify which racecourses are more suitable for a particular type of horse.

Typically, the track and course aspect of the guides will look at:

  • Straight – indicates the length of the home straight.
  • Shape – describes the overall shape of the course, round, oval, square, figures of 8, etc.
  • The direction – either left or right-handed bends.
  • Speed or Stamina required indicates the horse’s running style. On long, straight courses, “galloping types” with stamina often excel, whereas on courses with sharp bends, more speed is required.
  • Surface – describes whether the racecourse is turf or an artificial surface.
