Listed Horse Races

There are so many stakes and conditions races in the UK, including the popular listed class.

The Listed class is a horse race at a level just below the Group level. Listed horse races are the three tiers of the highest-rated horse racing events. The racehorses run off level weights unless they receive a weight allowance for a 3-year-old racing against older horses or carry a penalty for previous success.

The top-rated horse racing trainers and jockeys fight out in listed races throughout the year in the UK.

No minimum official rating is required to run in a Listed race, but Listed races are considered more prestigious than Premier handicap races.

Do You Receive Black Type Winning a Listed Race?

Listed races are the easiest opportunity for horses to earn black-type status.

Black-type horses have their names printed in bold, black type, in sales catalogues.

The European Pattern Committee regulates the listed races to give black-type statuses.

Are Horses Handicapped in Listed Races?

Listed races are intended to be a test of class, so horses compete at level weights and no horses are handicapped.

There is a weight allowance subject to weight-for-age and weight-for-sex allowances and penalties for winning in a higher grade or a previously listed event.

Higher-grade races include Group 1 races, Group 2 races, and Group 3 racing events.

The listed race serves as a trial for the Winter Derby, a Group 3 race run over the same course & distance 21 days later.

Hever Sprint Stakes

The Hever Sprint Stakes is a Listed flat horse race run at Lingfield Racecourse over 5 furlongs and 6 yards in February.

The listed race is open to horses aged four years or older.

Road to the Kentucky Derby Conditions Stakes

The Road to the Kentucky Derby Conditions Stakes is a horse race run at Kempton Racecourse over a 1-mile distance in March. The race is open for three years only, and a prep race for European horses ahead of the Kentucky Derby.

Spring Cup

The Spring Cup is a Listed flat horse race in the United Kingdom that is only open to horses that are three years old.

It is held at Lingfield over a distance of 7 furlongs and 1 yard (1,409 metres) and is held in early March each year.

Lady Wulfruna Stakes

The Lady Wulfruna Stakes is a Listed flat horse event hosted in the UK for horses aged four and up. It is held every year in March at Wolverhampton over a distance of 7 furlongs and 36 yards (1,441 metres).

The race was first held in 2002, and in 2007 it was given the Listed title.

Brocklesby Stakes

The Brocklesby Stakes is a two-year-old horse race in Great Britain held in flat conditions. It is significant for being the British Flat racing season’s traditional first race for two-year-olds. It takes place in March and is run over five furlongs and three yards at Doncaster Racecourse.

Doncaster Mile Stakes

King Richard III Stakes

The King Richard III Stakes is a Listed flat horse event held in the United Kingdom for horses aged four and up.

It is run at Leicester in April over a distance of seven furlongs (1,408 metres).

Nottinghamshire Oaks

The Nottinghamshire Oaks is a Listed flat horse race held in the United Kingdom for mares and fillies aged four and above.

It takes place each year in April and is run over 1 mile, 2 furlongs, and 50 yards at Nottingham.

Paradise Stakes

The Paradise Stakes is a Listed flat horse event taking place in GB for horses aged four and over. It takes place every year in April at Ascot over a distance of one mile.

The Chobham Conditions Stakes was held for the first time in 1995.

It takes place every year in late April or early May at Goodwood over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres). In 1997, the event made its debut.

Pretty Polly Stakes

The Pretty Polly Stakes is a British flat horse event for three-year-old fillies. It is run on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket in late April or early May over a distance of 1 mile and 2 furlongs (2,012 metres).

Cheshire Oaks

The Cheshire Oaks is a flat horse event for three-year-old fillies. In May, it is run over a distance of one mile, three furlongs, and seventy-five yards (2,281 metres) and takes place in Chester.

Dee Stakes

Oaks Trial Stakes

Derby Trial Stakes

Buckhounds Stakes

The Buckhounds Stakes is a Listed flat horse race held in Great Britain for horses aged four and above.

It is held each year in May at Ascot over a distance of 1 mile 3 furlongs and 211 yards (2,406 metres).

Kilvington Fillies’ Stakes

The Kilvington Fillies’ Stakes is a Listed flat horse event taking place in Britain for fillies and mares aged three and over.

It is held each year in May at Nottingham throughout 6 furlongs and 18 yards. The race was first held in the year 2000.

Spring Trophy

The Spring Trophy is a Listed flat horse race that is held in GB for horses aged three and above.

It is contested each year in May at Haydock Park over a distance of 6 furlongs and 212 yards.

Royal Windsor Stakes

Westow Stakes

Marygate Fillies’ Stakes

It takes place every year in May at York over a distance of 5 furlongs.

Michael Seely Memorial Stakes

The Michael Seely Memorial Stakes, now known as the Oaks Farm Stables Fillies’ Stakes, is a Listed flat horse event held in the United Kingdom for three-year-old fillies only.

It is held every year in May at York throughout 7 furlongs and 192 yards.

Carnarvon Stakes

The Carnarvon Stakes is a Listed flat horse event available only to three-year-old horses.

It takes place every year in May at Newbury over a distance of 6 furlongs.

Fairway Stakes

The Fairway Stakes is a British Listed flat horse event for three-year-old horses.

In May, it is run over 1 mile and 2 furlongs at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile.

King Charles II Stakes

The King Charles II Stakes is a Listed flat horse competition held in the United Kingdom for horses aged three years and older.

Every year in May, it is held at Newmarket over a distance of seven furlongs.

Fillies’ Trial Stakes

The Fillies’ Trial Stakes is a Listed flat horse event for three-year-old fillies held in Great Britain.

It is held in May at Newbury over a distance of one mile and two furlongs.

Leisure Stakes

The Leisure Stakes is a Listed flat horse event held in the United Kingdom for horses aged three and up. It runs every year in May at Windsor over 6 furlongs and 12 yards.

Until 2000, the race was held at Lingfield Park.

Rothesay Stakes

The Rothesay Stakes is a Listed flat horse event held in the United Kingdom for fillies and mares aged four and up. It takes place every year in May at Ayr over a distance of 1 mile and 2 furlongs.

In 2016, the race was designated as a new Listed competition.

Heron Stakes

The Heron Stakes is a British Listed flat horse event for three-year-old thoroughbreds. It is held every year in late May at Sandown Park over a distance of one mile.

Previously, the tournament was hosted at Kempton Park.

Cecil Frail Stakes

The Cecil Frail Stakes is a Listed flat horse event held in the United Kingdom for mares and fillies aged three and up.

It takes place every year in May at Haydock Park over a distance of 6 furlongs. In 1999, the event was held for the first time.

Height of Fashion Stakes

The Height of Fashion Stakes is a Listed flat horse competition for three-year-old fillies held in Great Britain. It takes place every year in May at Goodwood over a distance of one mile, one furlong, and 197 yards.

Cocked Hat Stakes

The Cocked Hat Stakes is a three-year-old colt and geldings-only Listed flat horse race held in the United Kingdom.

It is run each year in May at Goodwood over a distance of 1 mile 3 furlongs and 44 yards (2,253 metres).

Festival Stakes

The Festival Stakes is a Listed flat horse event in the United Kingdom for horses aged four and up. It is held at Goodwood over a distance of 1 mile 1 furlong 197 yards and takes place every year in May.

The Clive Graham Stakes was the name of the race until 1996, when it was renamed.

Tapster Stakes

The Tapster Stakes is a Listed flat horse event that takes place in the UK for horses aged four and up. It is held each year in May at Goodwood over a distance of 1 mile 3 furlongs and 218 yards (2,412 metres).

The event was first held in 2007.

National Stakes

The National Stakes is a Listed flat horse race held in the United Kingdom for two-year-old horses.

It is held annually at Sandown Park over a distance of 5 furlongs and 10 yards (1,015 metres) and takes place around the end of May.

Achilles Stakes

The Achilles Stakes is a Listed flat horse event held in GB for horses aged three and over. It is held every year in late May or early June at Haydock Park over a distance of 5 furlongs.

The first race was held in 1995 at Kempton Park.

Hilary Needler Trophy

The Hilary Needler Trophy is a two-year-old filly-only condition flat horse race held in the United Kingdom. In 2001, the race was given Listed status; however, it was demoted in 2011. It is held each year in late May or early June at Beverley over a 5-furlong distance.

Surrey Stakes

The Surrey Stakes is a Listed flat horse event in the United Kingdom available only to three-year-old horses. It is held every year in late May or early June at Epsom over a distance of 7 furlongs and 3 yards.

The Vodacom Conditions Stakes were held for the first time in 1995.

Woodcote Stakes

The Woodcote Stakes is a two-year-old Thoroughbred flat horse event held in the United Kingdom. It takes place at Epsom Downs in late May or early June over a distance of 6 furlongs and 3 yards.

Abingdon Stakes

The Abingdon Stakes is held every year in June at Newbury over a distance of 1 mile and 2 furlongs.

It is a listed flat horse event held in Great Britain for three-year-old fillies.

Maggie Dickson Stakes

The Maggie Dickson Stakes, also known as the Stobo Castle Ladies’ Day Gold Cup Fillies’ Stakes for sponsorship purposes, is a Listed flat horse event in Great Britain open to mares and fillies aged three and above.

Ganton Stakes

The Ganton Stakes is a flat horse event taking place in the UK for horses aged three and up.

It is held every year in June at York over a distance of 7 furlongs and 192 yards. In 2012, the race was held for the first time.

Scurry Stakes
