Wolferton Stakes

The Wolferton Stakes is a Listed race for four-year-olds and upwards over a mile and a quarter at Royal Ascot.

The Wolferton Stakes takes place on Tuesday 20th June 2023 at 5:35 pm.

This race is often the stepping-stone to middle-distance Group races.

Race Overview

The Wolferton Stakes is a Listed flat horse event held in the United Kingdom for horses aged four and up. It is held at Ascot every year in June on the first day of the Royal Ascot meeting and is run over a distance of 1 mile 1 furlong and 212 yards.

Famous Wolferton Stakes Winners

The Wolferton Stakes was introduced in 2002 when the Royal meeting was extended from four days to five.

It was originally run as a handicap but was changed to a stakes race in 2018.

The inaugural running was won by Ulundi, trained by Paul Webber and ridden by Richard Hughes. He went on to finish a close fourth in the Arlington Million next time.

Imperial Stride (2005) won this race off a handicap mark of 100 but later achieved a rating of 120 after completing a sequence of five victories. His biggest win came in the Group 2 Scottish Derby at Ayr. Supaseus (2008) also won off an official rating of 100 and he won the Cambridgeshire the following season off the same mark.

Mahsoob was a red hot Wolferton Stakes tip in 2015 after victories in competitive handicaps at Newbury and York. He looked a high-class horse in the making but did not quite live up to his full potential. Mahsoob’s biggest victory came in the Group 3 Earl Of Sefton Stakes at Newmarket the following season.

John Gosden’s Gatewood was a popular winner in 2012. He was aimed at the Melbourne Cup, winning the Geelong Cup but failing to make the line-up at Flemington. He returned to the UK and won the Group 3 Prix De Reux, finishing down the field in the 2014 Melbourne Cup and eventually retiring to stud in 2015.

2014 winner Contributer was purchased by Godolphin and was twice successful at Group 1 level in Australia. He won the Chipping Norton Stakes at Randwick and the Ranvet Stakes at Rosehill.

Forgotten Voice (2013) also ran in Australia while 2018 winner Monarchs Glen continued his racing career in the United States.

The best winner of the Wolferton Stakes was Addeybb in 2019, trained by William Haggas and ridden by Daniel Tudhope. He also became a success in Australia, winning the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 2020 and 2021. He finally claimed a Group 1 in Britain when landing the Champion Stakes at Ascot in 2020.

Key Wolferton Stakes Trials

There are no obvious trials for this race which often attracts high-class handicappers looking to progress to listed class.

Only two of the last twelve winners had previously recorded a victory at Group 1 to 3 level.

The race has regularly produced horses with a possible future in Australia or America.

The 2018 renewal provided clues to several future big race winners. Third-placed Muntahaa won the Ebor Handicap at York, fifth-placed Mirage Dancer won the Group 3 Glorious Stakes at Goodwood and Laraaib (ninth) won the Group 3 Cumberland Lodge Stakes at Ascot.

There were also high profile wins for Sharja Bridge (eighth) and Morando (eleventh).

Wolferton Stakes Betting Trends

Four-year-olds have by far the best record in this race, winning eight of the last twelve renewals. There were a couple of notable exceptions in Ulundi (2002) and Forgotten Voice (2013), aged seven and eight respectively. They both won when the race was run as a handicap.

Rainbow Peak (2010) was the first winning favourite in this race in its ninth year.

There have been three winning favourites in the past twelve seasons; Rainbow Peak (2010), Gatewood (2012) and Mahsoob (2015).

There have been some long priced winners of the Wolferton Stakes, a trend that has continued since it was changed from a handicap to a stakes race.

Sir Michael Stoute’s Imperial Stride returned at 25-1 in 2005, the year that Royal Ascot was run at York.

Championship Point (2007) and Snoano (2017) also returned at 25-1. 2021 winner Juan Elcano was a 14-1 chance and both Beachfire (2011) and Forgotten Voice (2013) were 12-1 chances.

Most recent Wolferton Stakes winners had at least two previous starts in the current season.

Eight of the last twelve winners had winning form over ten furlongs, four of them had already won at Ascot.

A rating of 105 or higher is usually required to win this race.

Monarchs Glen was rated 115 when winning the first running as a stakes race in 2018 while subsequent Group 1 winner Addeybb (2019) was officially rated 112.

Wolferton Stakes – Top Trainers and Jockeys

John Gosden has a tremendous record in this race with four winners; Beachfire (2011), Gatewood (2012), Mahsoob (2015), Monarchs Glen (2018). Gatewood (2012) and Mahsoob (2015) were both popular Wolferton Stakes tips and started well-backed favourites.

In Time’s Eye was the first Irish-trained winner in 2003 and Aidan O’Brien won the race with Sir Isaac Newton in 2016.

Ryan Moore and William Buick have two winners apiece in the Wolferton Stakes. Moore was successful aboard Perfect Stride (2009) and Sir Isaac Newton (2016). Buick’s winners came in successive seasons with Beachfire (2011) and Gatewood (2012).
