Famous Many Clouds Chase Winners

2015 winner Don Poli won three Grade 1 races in his career. He was the leading novice chaser in Great Britain and Ireland in 2014-15, winning the Topaz Novices’ Chase at Leopardstown and the RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. He finished third in the 2016 Cheltenham Gold Cup behind Don Cossack, both horses racing in the colours of Gigginstown House Stud.

Many Clouds is famous for his win in the 2015 Aintree Grand National, trained by Oliver Sherwood and ridden by Leighton Aspell. His win was notable for carrying 11st 9lbs, the highest weighted winner of the National since Red Rum in 1974. He had won the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury in 2014, the first horse in history to win the Hennessy and the National in the same season.

Many Clouds also won the Cotswold Chase twice in 2015 and 2017. His second victory was tragic as he collapsed and died after bravely fighting off the challenge of odds-on favourite and leading Gold Cup hope Thistlecrack. He was officially rated 2lbs higher than subsequent Gold Cup winner Sizing John. His popularity is demonstrated by having such a prestigious race named in his honour.

Definitely Red became the first dual winner of this race in 2017 and 2018. He was a tough and consistent handicapper who progressed to win at Grade 2 level, here and in the Cotswold Chase at Cheltenham.

2019 winner Native River had won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2018. He was also a three-time winner of the Denman Chase (2017, 2018 and 2020). He established himself as a chaser of the highest class with victories in the Hennessy Gold Cup and the Welsh Grand National in 2016. He defied top weight of 11st 12lbs at Chepstow, the highest weight carried to victory in that race since the remarkable win of Carvill’s Hill in 1991.

The high standard of winners was maintained in 2021 when Protektorat won convincingly for Dan Skelton. He finished third in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and began his 2022-23 campaign with victory in the Grade 1 Betfair Chase at Haydock Park.

Four winners of this race have run in the Cotswold Chase on their next outing, a recognised Cheltenham Gold Cup Trial. Many Clouds (2016) and Definitely Red (2017) won both races. Three winners ran in the Lexus Chase at Leopardstown with Don Poli (2015) winning in Ireland.

Six Many Clouds winners have run in the Cheltenham Gold Cup in the same season; Don Poli (2015-16) and Protektorat (2021-22) both finished third.

Many Clouds Chase Betting Trends

There does not appear to be any age bias for this race with horses winning from ages five to ten. Unioniste (2013) won as a five-year-old while the oldest winner was the ten-year-old Lake View Lad in 2020.

There have been four successful outright favourites and two joint favourites in this race to date.

Only one of the first eleven renewals was won by a horse not in the first three in the betting. That was 16-1 chance Lake View Lad (2020) who bucked the trend of winning market leaders.

The lowest officially rated winner so far was Master Of The Hall (144) who won the inaugural running in 2011.

The highest-rated winner was Native River (167) in 2019, just 1lb higher than Many Clouds (2016).

Many Clouds Chase – Top Trainers and Jockeys
