Jockey Profile of N de Boinville
Horse racing was not De Boinville’s initial choice of career, having intended to study politics at the University of Newcastle. He left after just six weeks and rode as an amateur for leading trainer Nicky Henderson.
Opportunities were hard to come by in the early years, with Barry Geraghty being the stable’s number one, but De Boinville’s reputation as an accomplished horseman continued to grow.
He took over the number one job at Henderson’s when Geraghty was appointed retained rider for owner JP McManus in 2015.
Nico de Boinville – Key Jockey Stats
Nico’s first Cheltenham Festival came aboard Whisper in the Coral Cup 2014 while riding as an amateur.
He turned professional shortly afterwards, and the following year he won the Cheltenham Gold Cup on Coneygree. That victory elevated him to the top of his profession and cemented his position as a key figure at the Henderson yard.
He rode a career-best 86 winners in 2018-19 and came within one of matching that figure in 2020-21. With the majority of his rides being for Henderson, he has consistently maintained a healthy 20% wins-to-rides ratio.
Nico de Boinville’s Big Race Wins
Nico has gone on to claim several of the top prizes at the Cheltenham Festival, all but one of them provided by Nicky Henderson. Coneygree was trained by Mark Bradstock to win the 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup, the first novice chaser to claim the prize for over 40 years.
Altior and De Boinville won the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle (2016), Arkle Challenge Trophy (2017) and Queen Mother Champion Chase (2018 and 2019).
He also rode Sprinter Sacre to win the Champion Chase in 2016. Shishkin has been spoken of in the same breath as those two great stars, and Nico has ridden him to success at the last two Cheltenham Festivals: Supreme (2020) and Arkle (2021).
Might Bite was another Festival winner for De Boinville (2017 RSA Chase) and won the King George VI Chase the same year.
Whisper won the Grade 1 Liverpool Hurdle in 2015, and Altior’s other big race wins under De Boinville include the Clarence House Chase (2019) and Tingle Creek Chase (2018).
Nico de Boinville’s – Most Famous Victories
De Boinville’s win on Coneygree in the 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup was certainly a key moment in his career. The eight-year-old novice was ridden with supreme confidence, De Boinville sending him straight to the front and repelling Djakadam and Road To Riches.
Another defining moment in his career was the 2016 Queen Mother Champion Chase on Sprinter Sacre. The horse had been the highest-rated steeplechaser in the land prior to being sidelined with a heart condition in 2013. He had been carefully nursed back to peak condition to regain his crown, defeating odds-on favourite Un De Sceaux.
De Boinville rode Altior to all but three of his record-breaking 19-race winning sequence. He eclipsed the 18 consecutive wins of Big Buck’s when landing the odds in the Celebration Chase at Sandown Park in April 2019.
