Famous Dahlia Stakes Winners

The Dahlia Stakes is named after the brilliant mare who won the Irish Oaks (1973), King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (1973, 1974), York International (1974, 1975) and a host of other top races worldwide. The race was first run as a listed event in 1997, with victory going to Luca Cumani’s Balalaika. It was subsequently upgraded to Group 3 in 2004 and Group 2 in 2015.

Heaven Sent won the race for Cheveley Park, Sir Michael Stoute and Ryan Moore in 2008 and 2009. 2013 winner Dank went on to enjoy great success aboard, taking the Beverly D Stakes and the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf. She retired with career earnings in excess of £1.4 million.

Andre Fabre won the race for France in 2014 with Esoterique. Her subsequent victories include the Prix Rothschild (2014), Prix Jacques Le Marois (2015) and Sun Chariot Stakes (2015). Wuheida (2018) was a previous winner of the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf, trained by Charlie Appleby for Godolphin.

Key Dahlia Stakes Trials

Ten of the last twelve winners of the Dahlia Stakes had already won at least once in Group race company.

Although there are no obvious trials for this race, it may be worth noting that four of those twelve had previously won at Newmarket.

Four of those fillies and mares went to Royal Ascot to contest the Duke of Cambridge Stakes next time.

Usherette (2016) won both races, while Izzi Top (2012) won the Middleton Stakes at York, and Dreamloper (2022) won the Prix d’Ispahan at Longchamp next time.

There have been four winning favourites in the last twelve renewals: Somehow (2017), Wuheida (2018), Terebellum (2020) and Via Sistina (2023).

All but two of those twelve featured in the first three in the betting.

Shock results are rare with Lady Bowthorpe (2021), the longest priced winner at only 6-1.

Four-year-olds have the best record in this race, winning for eleven successive seasons before a run of three five-year-olds (2021-2023).

Dahlia Stakes – Top Trainers and Jockeys

Sir Michael Stoute and Ryan Moore have been the Trainer and Jockey to follow in the Dahlia Stakes. They have both won it six times. Stoute’s winners: Echelon (2007), Heaven Sent (2008, 2009), Strawberrydaiquiri (2010), Dank (2013) and Bragging (2015). Moore’s winners: Heaven Sent (2008, 2009), Strawberrydaiquiri (2010), Dank (2013), Bragging (2015) and Somehow (2017).

Betting on the Dahlia Stakes

The Dahlia Stakes has been dominated by the first three in the betting, so the form can be relied on here.

Sir Michael Stoute’s record speaks for itself, although his most recent win in the race was back in 2015. His entries are always worth noting
