The Ascot Hurdle is a Grade 2 National Hunt race run over approximately two miles and three and a half furlongs at Ascot Racecourse in November.
Its intermediate distance is central to the race’s character. It is short enough to attract high-class two-mile hurdlers but demanding enough for horses with proven stamina over further, particularly on testing autumn ground.
That has produced an outstanding roll of honour. Dawn Run, Morley Street, Baracouda, Hardy Eustace, Annie Power, Faugheen and Rock On Ruby are among the horses to have won the Ascot Hurdle, while more recent winners include Buzz, Goshen, Blueking D’Oroux, Lucky Place and Wodhooh.

Why the Ascot Hurdle Is Different From a Two-Mile Championship Test
The Ascot Hurdle sits in an interesting part of the National Hunt programme.
At approximately two miles and three and a half furlongs, it doesn’t fit neatly into either the two-mile or three-mile hurdle divisions.
That matters.
A specialist two-miler must prove its speed can carry over the extra distance. A stronger stayer dropping in trip needs enough pace to remain competitive if the race develops tactically.
Ascot adds another test. The jumps course is right-handed and galloping, with an uphill finish that can expose a horse whose stamina is stretched.
On softer ground, the final half-mile can become particularly demanding.
This combination has allowed horses with very different profiles to win the race.
The Ascot Hurdle Has Produced Champion Hurdlers and Stayers
Few Grade 2 hurdles can match the range of horses on the Ascot roll of honour.
Some winners possessed genuine championship speed.
Dawn Run won the Ascot Hurdle in 1983 before taking the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham in 1984. Her career later became unique when she added the Cheltenham Gold Cup over fences in 1986.
Morley Street won at Ascot in 1990 before becoming Champion Hurdle winner the following spring.
Hardy Eustace arrived at Ascot as an established champion, having already won successive Champion Hurdles in 2004 and 2005. He won the Ascot Hurdle in both 2006 and 2007.
The modern era continued the connection.
Annie Power won at Ascot in 2013 and later won the Champion Hurdle in 2016. Faugheen followed her onto the Ascot roll of honour in 2014 and won the Champion Hurdle later that same season.
Rock On Ruby, the 2012 Champion Hurdle winner, won at Ascot in 2015 at the age of ten.
Other Ascot Hurdle winners have been better suited by greater tests of stamina.
Baracouda won the race in 2000 before establishing himself as one of the outstanding staying hurdlers of his generation. He subsequently won consecutive Stayers’ Hurdles at Cheltenham.
That range is one reason the Ascot Hurdle remains such an informative early-season race.
Previous Ascot Hurdle Winners
The recent roll of honour contains established Grade 1 horses alongside younger runners still progressing through the hurdle ranks.
| Year | Winner | Age | Jockey | Trainer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | Wodhooh | 5 | Danny Gilligan | Gordon Elliott |
| 2024 | Lucky Place | 5 | Nico de Boinville | Nicky Henderson |
| 2023 | Blueking D’Oroux | 4 | Harry Cobden | Paul Nicholls |
| 2022 | Goshen | 6 | Jamie Moore | Gary Moore |
| 2021 | Buzz | 7 | Nico de Boinville | Nicky Henderson |
| 2020 | Song For Someone | 5 | Nico de Boinville | Tom Symonds |
| 2019 | If The Cap Fits | 7 | Sean Bowen | Harry Fry |
| 2018 | If The Cap Fits | 6 | Noel Fehily | Harry Fry |

| 2014 | Faugheen | 6 | Ruby Walsh | Willie Mullins |
| 2013 | Annie Power | 5 | Ruby Walsh | Willie Mullins |
If The Cap Fits is the most recent horse to win consecutive renewals, scoring for Harry Fry in 2018 and 2019.
The table also shows why rigid age rules offer limited value. Winners since 2013 have ranged from four-year-old Blueking D’Oroux to ten-year-old Rock On Ruby.
Dawn Run Heads an Exceptional Ascot Roll of Honour
The quality of the Ascot Hurdle is clearer when looking beyond recent results.
Dawn Run is the standout name because no other horse has won both the Champion Hurdle and Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Her 1983 Ascot success came during the hurdling phase of an extraordinary career.
Morley Street was another outstanding winner. His achievements included the Champion Hurdle and four consecutive victories in the Aintree Hurdle.
Baracouda took a different route. The French-trained stayer became one of the defining long-distance hurdlers of the early 2000s.
Hardy Eustace brought proven Champion Hurdle quality to Ascot and won this race twice.
Annie Power and Faugheen gave Willie Mullins and Ruby Walsh consecutive Ascot Hurdle victories in 2013 and 2014. Both subsequently became Champion Hurdle winners.
The race has also been won by horses whose best achievements came over fences. Silviniaco Conti won the 2010 renewal before developing into a top-class staying chaser and twice winning the King George VI Chase.
The history therefore says more than a simple list of famous winners. Ascot has repeatedly attracted horses with the class to succeed at the highest level across different distances and, occasionally, different disciplines.
Two Miles Three Furlongs Creates the Central Ascot Puzzle
The intermediate trip is the first thing to consider when analysing the race.
A high-class two-mile hurdler can have a significant speed advantage, but the extra distance has to be genuinely within range.
That becomes more important if November rain produces soft ground.
Conversely, a horse accustomed to three miles may have no problem with stamina but can find itself vulnerable if the early gallop is steady and the race develops into a sprint from the home turn.
This makes previous form over intermediate distances particularly useful.
It is not essential for a runner to have won at exactly the Ascot trip, but there should be evidence that its combination of speed and stamina suits the test.
Faugheen is a good example of a horse with that versatility. He had enough speed to become Champion Hurdler but also won the Aintree Hurdle over further.
Ascot’s Uphill Finish Makes Stamina Matter
The bare distance does not tell the complete story.
Ascot is a galloping track, and the climb towards the finish means horses still need to conserve enough energy for the closing stages.
A strong early pace can make the race ride more like a staying test, especially on soft ground.
A controlled gallop can produce the opposite result and favour horses that can accelerate after the final turn.
The going therefore needs to be considered alongside distance rather than separately.
A horse that stays two miles and four furlongs on good ground has not automatically proved that it wants a similar distance when conditions become testing.
Seasonal Reappearance Is Not an Automatic Negative
The Ascot Hurdle often comes early enough in the jumps season for leading horses to arrive without a recent run.
That should not automatically count against them.
High-class hurdlers can often produce strong performances when fresh, and trainers can use Ascot as a starting point for a campaign aimed at major races later in the winter.
The more useful question is whether the horse has previously performed well after a break and whether its trainer has a record of preparing runners to peak first time out.
Fitness still matters, particularly if the ground is testing, but lack of a recent run should be assessed in the context of the individual horse.
The Route From Ascot Towards Kempton and Cheltenham
The Ascot Hurdle can influence several different parts of the winter hurdle programme.
For speedier horses, the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton is an obvious subsequent target.
Faugheen won both races in 2014. Yanworth also followed his Ascot success by winning at Kempton in 2016.
The Christmas Hurdle is shorter and Kempton provides a sharper test, so the double requires a horse with enough pace to move successfully between the two races.
Cheltenham’s International Hurdle has also provided a natural next step. Our International Hurdle guide identifies the Ascot Hurdle as one of its important form references.
Song For Someone completed that particular double in 2020.
For horses developing into stayers, the route can look very different.
Ascot stages the Long Walk Hurdle over three miles in December, while the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham is the championship target for the division.
The important point is that the Ascot Hurdle does not funnel its best horses towards one obvious destination. The performance can instead help establish which division suits them.
The Aintree Hurdle Is a Natural Spring Comparison
The Aintree Hurdle provides an interesting comparison later in the season.
Like the Ascot Hurdle, it is staged over an intermediate distance that can bring two-mile hurdlers and stronger stayers together.
The Aintree race is a Grade 1 and takes place in the spring, but the same basic question applies: does the horse possess the right balance of speed and stamina?
Several major names have won both races during their careers.
Dawn Run, Morley Street and Annie Power all appear on both rolls of honour.
Faugheen also demonstrated the same intermediate-distance versatility during his career.
Form over these distances can therefore tell us more about a horse than simply labelling it a two-miler or a stayer.
Nicky Henderson’s Record Deserves Attention
Nicky Henderson has an outstanding modern record in the Ascot Hurdle.
His winners since 2008 include Chomba Womba, Zaynar, Oscar Whisky, Buzz and Lucky Place.
Lucky Place gave Henderson another victory in 2024, defeating the previous year’s winner Blueking D’Oroux.
The record is significant because Henderson has repeatedly used the race for high-class or progressive hurdlers with different long-term targets.
Trainer records should never become automatic betting systems, but they can reveal which yards consistently identify horses suited to a particular race and prepare them accordingly.
Harry Fry also enjoyed an excellent spell, winning with Rock On Ruby in 2015 before If The Cap Fits completed back-to-back victories in 2018 and 2019.
Willie Mullins won consecutive editions with Annie Power and Faugheen, while Gordon Elliott joined the roll of honour with Wodhooh in 2025.
Wodhooh Added Another Irish Winner in 2025
Wodhooh won the 2025 Ascot Hurdle for Gordon Elliott under Danny Gilligan.
The five-year-old mare arrived with a high level of form and justified favouritism, beating Celtic Dino by two and a half lengths.
Her success added another Irish-trained winner to a race that has periodically attracted leading challengers from across the Irish Sea.
That international element has been important throughout the race’s history.
Dawn Run was trained in Ireland by Paddy Mullins, Hardy Eustace represented Dessie Hughes, and Willie Mullins sent Annie Power and Faugheen to win consecutive renewals.
The Irish challenge should therefore be judged on the strength of the individual horse rather than treated as unusual for the race.
Pace Can Change the Ascot Hurdle Completely
Small fields are common in conditions races of this type, and that can make pace particularly important.
A high-class hurdler dropping back from longer distances may want a strong gallop that brings stamina into play.
A speedier horse can benefit if the leaders are allowed to conserve energy and the race develops late.
The number of runners alone does not tell us how strongly the race will be run.
Identify the likely leader, which horses prefer to race prominently and whether more than one runner is likely to contest the early pace.
Our guide to horse racing pace maps explains how running styles can be used to anticipate the shape of a race before the start.
Jumping rhythm matters too.
Ten hurdles need to be negotiated, and small errors can become particularly costly when a tactical race suddenly quickens.
What Matters Most When Assessing the Ascot Hurdle?
Class should be the starting point.
The historical roll of honour shows that genuinely high-class horses regularly win this race.
Next consider the trip.
Determine whether a two-mile horse has sufficient stamina for Ascot or whether a stronger stayer possesses enough tactical pace for a race that may not become a searching test.
Ground can change that calculation considerably.
Testing conditions push the balance towards stamina, while better ground can make speed more influential.
Then examine likely pace and fitness.
A seasonal debutant with a strong record fresh may be better prepared than a rival that has already raced, while a horse requiring a strong gallop could be compromised by a small tactical field.
Previous Grade 1 form deserves respect, but younger improving horses should not be dismissed simply because their achievements have yet to reach the same level.
Blueking D’Oroux was only four when winning in 2023, while Lucky Place and Wodhooh both succeeded at five.
The best approach is to assess where each horse is in its career rather than applying a rigid age or experience rule.
Finding Value in a Small Grade 2 Field
The Ascot Hurdle frequently attracts quality rather than quantity.
That can produce a short betting market in which several runners are already well known.
Short prices should not be mistaken for certainty.
A favourite stepping into unknown territory over the distance, returning from a long absence or facing unsuitable ground can still be poor value.
Likewise, a runner with an inferior official rating may be improving quickly enough to close the gap.
The aim is to estimate each horse’s chance under the specific Ascot conditions and then compare that assessment with the available odds.
Our guide to finding value in horse racing explains why identifying the most likely winner and identifying the best bet are not always the same thing.

Yes. Baracouda won the Ascot Hurdle before becoming a dual winner of the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham.
Why is the Ascot Hurdle distance important?
Its intermediate trip creates a meeting point between the traditional hurdle divisions. Two-mile horses need enough stamina for the extra distance, while stronger stayers need sufficient speed if the race becomes tactical.
Is previous Ascot form essential?
No. Course experience can be useful, but the race has repeatedly been won by horses without relying on an extensive previous Ascot record. Class, trip, ground, fitness and pace provide stronger evidence when considered together.
Ascot Hurdle Summary
The Ascot Hurdle has built one of the strongest rolls of honour among Britain’s Grade 2 hurdle races.
Its place in the calendar and intermediate distance are central to that record. The race can accommodate a Champion Hurdle horse with sufficient stamina, an emerging middle-distance performer or a stronger stayer with enough speed to cope with a tactical contest.
Dawn Run, Morley Street, Baracouda, Hardy Eustace, Annie Power and Faugheen demonstrate the calibre of horse that has succeeded at Ascot.
For race analysis, the most useful questions concern the balance between speed and stamina, the likely ground, early-season fitness and how the pace will develop.
That is far more informative than applying a fixed age, starting-price or recent-run trend to a race that has been won by such a varied collection of high-class hurdlers.
