Trainer Profile – Joe Tizzard

Joe Tizzard is the new name on the licence of his father Colin’s successful Dorset stable. He took over officially at the end of the 2021-22 season and saddled his first runners at Chepstow on 22 April 2022. He will be looking to continue the relentless progress of the stable after 23 years with Colin at the helm.

Joe was champion conditional jockey in Britain in 1998-99 with a record 91 winners to his name. He rode Cue Card to victory in the 2010 Champion Bumper and the 2013 Ryanair Chase. He also won the 1998 Foxhunter Chase aboard Earthmover and the 1999 Arkle Chase on Flagship Uberalles.

He won the Warwick Classic Chase on his father’s Hey Big Spender in 2012 and announced his retirement the following season.

Joe Tizzard – Key Trainer Stats

Joe inherits a yard which hit the big-time around 2015, breaking through the £1 million prize money barrier for the first time in 2015-16. The total earnings peaked at just over £2 million the following season, only failing to hit the £1 million mark in 2020-21 since.

Big names like Native River, Cue Card and Thistlecrack enabled the Tizzards to compete with the likes of Paul Nicholls and Nicky Henderson.

The best season’s total to date was 79 in 2017-18 and they were only two short of that number the following campaign.

Tizzard Stable Big Race Wins

Colin Tizzard claimed his first Cheltenham Festival victory with Cue Card in the 2014 Champion Bumper. The horse went on to become a racing superstar. His 15 career wins include the 2015 King George VI Chase, three Betfair Chase victories (2013, 2015 and 2016), the Ryanair Chase (2013) and two Ascot Chases (2013 and 2017).

He trained over 800 winners including 32 Grade 1 races before handing over the reins to his son.

Other career highlights for Colin include a second King George in 2016 with Thistlecrack and the Cheltenham Gold Cup with Native River in 2018.

Tizzard stable – Most Famous Victories

Joe Tizzard rode Cue Card in his first twenty races under rules.

His victory in the Champion Bumper came as a shock to most punters at 40-1, the horse having won at Fontwell Park on his only previous start. Although only fourth in the Supreme the following season, the gelding’s future always lay over fences.

Joe’s biggest victory on Cue Card came in the Ryanair Chase in 2013. Starting at 7-2, he overhauled the favourite First Lieutenant at the last before powering clear to win by 9 lengths. Native River was Richard Johnson’s ride, the pair famously landing the 2018 Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Summary of Jumps Trainer Joe Tizzard

Joe has been a key member of “Team Tizzard” since he was a teenager so it is no surprise to see him land running with his name on the licence.

The yard may lack an obvious stable star at present but it is only a matter of time before they are back challenging for the major prizes.

Guides to the Best Horse Racing Trainers

Here are all the comprehensive guides for horse racing trainers:

As the Co-Founder of British Racecourses, I love the chance to share my enjoyment of racing with others. As a family, we have always loved the racing and went to Haydock races as kids, as often as we could. We are now lucky enough to own some fantastic racehorses who we will follow around the tracks and we have had some great wins. As part of British Racecourses, I enjoy visiting and reviewing the racecourses that we visit, all of which I think have something to offer and are brilliant in their own ways.
