Punchestown Festival Day Three Racing
The third day of horse racing at the Punchestown Festival takes place on Thursday, April 28th 2023.
Here are all the races taking place on the third day of the Punchestown Festival and our day 3 Punchestown tips:
Specialist Joinery Group Handicap Hurdle
The 1st race takes place at 3:40 pm and is the Specialist Joinery Group Handicap Hurdle race.
An opening look handicap packed full of dark horses and potential improvers, our selection is the Harry Fry trained Gin Coco, although a flat fit Luke Street looks like he’s been aimed at this.
- TIP – Gin Coco
- EW- Luke Street
Gino Coco has made the trip over from the UK and can make it pay. Luke Street has a touch of class on the flat and can chase him home.
Pigsback.com Handicap Chase (Grade B)
The 2nd race takes place at 4:15 pm and is the Pigsback.com Handicap Chase (Grade B) race.
Another tricky handicap, this time over fences, and we fancy the likely favourite Grange Walk. A faller on his last run, he can put that behind him. Silk Ver Glass could be a good each-way bet.
- TIP – Grange Walk
- EW – Silk Ver Glass
If Grange Walk puts in a clear round we expect him to win.
La Touche Cup Cross Country Race
The 3rd race takes place at 4:50 pm and is the La Touche Cup Cross Country Race.
We love the Cross Country race and is difficult to look past Shady Operator for E. Bolger – who is a master trainer over this course. That said, a huge weight of 12-7 could make him vulnerable late on. Potters Corner is a tentative selection at a big price.
- TIP – Potters Corner
- EW – Tout Es Permis
Potters Corner could enjoy the enjoy the unique challenge. Shady Operator will be well prepared but the weight could tell late on. Tour Es Permis has apparently been aimed at this for a while.
Champion Stayers Hurdle (Grade 1)
The 4th race takes place at 5:25 pm and is the Punchestown Champion Stayers Hurdle (Grade 1) race.
No Flooring Porter but last year’s winner Klassical Dream is back and is a strong favourite to repeat the win. Sire De Berlais bounced back at Aintree and if in the same form will make a race of it.
- TIP – Klassical Dream
- EW – Paisley Park
Klassical Dream will likely have been aimed at this valuable race for some time. Sire De Berlais is feared but it may be the admirable Paisley Park who gives the favourite most to worry about.
Conway Piling Handicap Hurdle (Grade B)
The 5th race takes place at 6:00 pm and is the Conway Piling Handicap Hurdle (Grade B) race.
Another competitive handicap, Nicky Henderson has sent over City Centre who has the look of a real improver. The Irish won’t let this valuable prize go easily so expect Sassy Yet Classy and A Great View to give the favourite plenty to think about.
- TIP – City Centre
- EW – A Great View
City Centre hasn’t made the journey over for the fresh air alone, he’s from a top outfit and can strike. A Great View can lead the home defence.
Barberstown Castle Novice Chase (Grade 1)
The 6th race takes place at 6:35 pm and is the Barberstown Castle Novice Chase (Grade 1) race.
A quality novice chase looks to be dominated by the Mullins camp. Blue Lord could lead a 1-2-3 for the Champion trainer.
- TIP – Blue Lord
- EW – Saint Sam
Mullins holds the key and Blue Lord can strike.
Mares Irish EBF Handicap Chase
The 7th race takes place at 7:10 pm and is the Mares Irish EBF Handicap Chase race.
A large field of mares and Western Zara catches the eye as a potential improver having won her last two. Minx Tara and Hurricane Georgie have a good amount of experience which will stand them in good stead in a wide-open race.
- TIP – Western Zara
- EW – Lilith
Western Zara can strike at the expense of Minx Tara in a tight looking Punchestown Mares Chase.
JP&M 70 Years In Business (C&G) Flat Race
The 8th race takes place at 7:45 pm and is the JP&M 70 Years In Business (C&G) Flat Race.
James’s Gate finished a gallant 3rd at Cheltenham behind two superstars. He can outclass this field.
- TIP – James’s Gate
- EW – Sir Argus
James’s Gate deserved to take this after a valiant effort at Cheltenham.
