kA tasty eight-race card is set to take place on day two of the Punchestown Festival and our top tipsters have had a look at the full racecard.
While Cheltenham Gold Cup star Minella Indo will not be running in the Punchestown Gold Cup, there is an assortment of top-class talent in the lineup, and we pick out our best bets for Wednesday’s action.
The Irish Mirror Novice Hurdle over 3 miles at 17:20 is the first race on Wednesday’s Punchestown schedule, with three Grade 1s throughout the day.
The Ladbrokes Punchestown Gold Cup at 17:55 puts the best-staying chasers against one another and is the main attraction.
3.40 – Adare Manor Opportunity Series Final Handicap Hurdle
Nap – LA MALMSON
Each Way – UNANSWERED
What looks to be a competitive handicap on paper to start off today. Unanswered trained by A J Martin and ridden by Liam McKenna has finished 3rd in two big handicaps this season and everything looks set for another big performance.
However, the Gavin Cromwell trained LA MALMSON is unexposed and was only just touched off last time out with the front two pulling clear of the field.
The winner has since franked that form in graded company and he is the selection to improve enough to claim this.
4.15 – Connolly’s RED MILLS Irish EBF Auction Hurdle Series Final

A trappy contest here and a few will fancy their chances. Three Card Brag wasn’t disgraced when a solid fifth in the Albert Bartlett at the Cheltenham festival and is sure to be on the premises. However, preference is for the course winner SANDOR CLEGANE trained by Paul Nolan will be Sean O’Keefe in the saddle. He is taken to continue his fine form and come out on top here.
4.45 – Louis Fitzgerald Hotel Hurdle
NAP – GRANGECLAREWEST
EACH WAY – IMAGINE
This represents a drop in class for GRANGECLAREWEST who has been competing in grade 1 company of late and can take advantage here. Of the others Imagine ran a creditable race to finish fifth in the Martin Pipe hurdle at Cheltenham and rates the main danger.
5.20 – Irish Mirror Novice Hurdle
Nap – GAELIC WARRIOR
Each Way – AFFORDABLE FURY
A competitive grade 1 novice hurdle with plenty of horses coming into the race off the back of some fine efforts.
GAELIC WARRIOR found only his talented stablemate too good in the Ballymore at Cheltenham and Willie Mullins and Paul Townsend will be looking to go one better this time around.
Affordable Fury trained by Noel Meade will be looking to prove his 150-1 second in the Albert Bartlett was no fluke and could give the selection the most to think about.
5.55 – Ladbrokes Punchestown Gold Cup
Nap – GALOPIN DES CHAMPS
Each Way – BRAVEMANSGAME
The Punchestown Gold Cup and all eyes will be on GALOPIN DES CHAMPS and Bravemansgame as the two prepare to lock horns again just as they did in the Cheltenham version.
It’s hard to get away from the fact that the selection had is measure once again and don’t see the Paul Nicholls trained horse reversing the form.
John Kiely trains A DREAM TO SHARE who is set to once again be partnered by Mr. Gleeson. He maintained his impressive unbeaten form figures by claiming the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham last time out with a few of today’s rivals behind.
One horse who was absent from the race that day was the Willie Mullins trained Tullyhill who was exceptionally impressive at Gowran Park taking his form figures to 2 from 2. He rates the dark horse of the race and could very well be the main danger.
7.05 – OMC Claims Handicap Chase
NAP – HA D’OR
Each Way – ILIKEDWAYURTHINKIN
A very tricky handicap on the cards with plenty of horses arriving in fine form.
However, it’s HA D’DOR trained by Willie Mullins and partnered by Paul Townsend who take a significant drop in grade having competed in the Arkle at the Cheltenham festival last time. He boasted some solid graded efforts prior to that.
Ilikedwayurthinkin is becoming particularly well handicapped and shouldn’t be dismissed.
7.45 – Weatherbys General Stud Book Irish EBF Mares Flat Race
NAP –FUNFUNFUN
EACH WAY –FANCYGIRL
Willie Mullins has a few well fancied horses here but FUNFUNFUN looks the most obvious solution now back against her own sex after failing to make an impact at the Cheltenham festival last time out. Stablemate Fancy Girl was disappointing last time out but its too early to write off her chances just yet and is taken to chase the selection home.
