Sun Chariot Stakes

Sun Chariot Stakes 2026

The Sun Chariot Stakes takes place at Newmarket on Saturday 3 October 2026, bringing together leading three-year-old and older fillies and mares over one mile on the Rowley Mile.

The Group 1 has attracted a field of 12 for 2026, headed by Blue Bolt, who returns to Newmarket having finished second in this race last year. She faces the 2025 winner Fallen Angel, 1000 Guineas winner True Love, Precise and City Of Memphis in a strong renewal.

The race is scheduled for 1.35pm and the going is currently good to firm.

Sun Chariot Stakes 2026 Runners

The declared field is:

  • Blue Bolt
  • City Of Memphis
  • Fallen Angel
  • Kon Tiki
  • Love Dynasty
  • Pina Sonata
  • Calendar Girl
  • Evolutionist
  • Moon Target
  • Precise
  • Secret Of Life
  • True Love

The field contains a mixture of established Group 1 performers, improving older fillies and three-year-olds receiving 3lb from their older rivals.

Blue Bolt sets the standard on official ratings at 119, ahead of Precise on 115, True Love on 113 and Fallen Angel on 111.

Blue Bolt Returns After Finishing Second in 2025

Blue Bolt has developed considerably since chasing home Fallen Angel in last year’s Sun Chariot.

Andrew Balding’s filly was still a three-year-old when beaten two and a quarter lengths here in 2025. She returns a year older after building an impressive sequence of victories.

Her 2026 campaign has established her as one of the leading female milers in Europe.

She won the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket’s July Course and followed that by defeating City Of Memphis in the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown.

That most recent performance is particularly relevant.

The Matron is another Group 1 over a mile for fillies and mares and has repeatedly provided useful form for the Sun Chariot. Blue Bolt beat City Of Memphis by two and a quarter lengths at Leopardstown, with several of Saturday’s Newmarket rivals further behind.

She now returns to the Rowley Mile with an official rating of 119 and five consecutive victories behind her.

There is very little to question about her recent form.

The more interesting issue is how the race develops tactically.

Fallen Angel Defends Her Crown

Fallen Angel produced an excellent front-running performance to win the 2025 Sun Chariot for Karl Burke.

James Doyle sent her forward and she made all, eventually beating Blue Bolt by two and a quarter lengths. Cinderella’s Dream finished another four and a half lengths behind in third.

That was not an isolated peak.

Fallen Angel had already established herself as a multiple Group 1 winner, and her 2025 Newmarket victory came after top-level successes in the Prix Rothschild and Matron Stakes.

Her 2026 form has been less dominant, but her return to this particular race deserves attention.

She knows the Rowley Mile, has already shown she can control a Sun Chariot from the front and remains capable of high-class form.

The presence or absence of pressure for the lead could therefore matter considerably.

If Fallen Angel can establish a comfortable rhythm again, the others cannot simply assume that superior recent form will allow them to pick her up late.

City Of Memphis Brings Strong Matron Form

City Of Memphis is another important part of the Matron Stakes form line.

Paddy Twomey’s four-year-old finished second to Blue Bolt at Leopardstown and arrives at Newmarket with an official rating of 110.

The bare rating leaves her with ground to find on Blue Bolt, but the Matron performance showed that she belongs in this company.

She had previously put together a progressive profile and now gets another opportunity over a straight mile.

The key question is whether she can reverse Leopardstown form with Blue Bolt rather than simply confirming herself as one of the better fillies immediately behind her.

Precise Represents Aidan O’Brien

Precise has an official rating of 115 and is one of two runners for Aidan O’Brien.

She is already proven at Newmarket and has competed extensively at Group 1 level.

Her season has brought her into contact with several of the strongest fillies in training, including Blue Bolt.

Precise finished behind Blue Bolt in the Falmouth Stakes and again encountered her in the Matron Stakes.

She therefore brings plenty of relevant form but needs to find a way of turning those previous meetings around.

As a three-year-old, she receives 3lb from Blue Bolt, City Of Memphis and the other older runners.

That weight-for-age allowance is worth considering in a race where the generations meet late in the season.

True Love Returns to Newmarket

True Love is another three-year-old from Aidan O’Brien’s team and already has a major Newmarket success on her record.

She won the 1000 Guineas over the Rowley Mile in May, having also won the Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket as a juvenile.

Course suitability is therefore established.

Her subsequent campaign has not been as straightforward, and she has been beaten by Precise as well as finishing behind Blue Bolt in the Matron Stakes.

The return to Newmarket is interesting because some horses simply produce their best performances on the Rowley Mile.

True Love does not need to prove she handles the course. She needs to show that she can reproduce her best spring form against a strong field containing older mares.

The Rest of the Field

The strength of the Sun Chariot is not limited to the most obvious Group 1 names.

Kon Tiki, Love Dynasty and Pina Sonata represent the older generation, while Calendar Girl, Evolutionist, Moon Target and Secret Of Life add further three-year-old interest.

Love Dynasty arrives with course-and-distance form and recent winning form.

Pina Sonata also comes into the race after a victory and has an official rating of 107.

Calendar Girl has already won over the course and distance, while Evolutionist has experience at a high level and is another runner for Karl Burke.

Moon Target has an official rating of 110 and has been running consistently without winning, while Secret Of Life has a lighter profile than several of the established Group 1 runners.

A field of 12 also creates a different tactical test from some recent editions. The 2024 race had only six runners and nine went to post in 2025.

Why the Rowley Mile Matters

Newmarket’s Rowley Mile is one of the most demanding straight miles in British racing.

The course is not simply a flat run from the stalls to the winning post.

Horses encounter undulations before climbing towards the finish, and that final section can expose a runner that has travelled too freely or committed too early.

This matters particularly in the Sun Chariot because many of the runners already have established form over a mile.

The question is therefore not whether they can complete the distance. It is whether their running style allows them to produce their best performance over this particular mile.

A horse that looks comfortable halfway through the race can still weaken during the climb to the line.

Pace Could Be Important

Fallen Angel’s 2025 victory demonstrated the importance of race shape.

She made the running and never allowed her rivals to get past her.

Blue Bolt was the only horse able to go with her when the race developed in earnest, but Fallen Angel still had enough left to draw clear.

The 2026 field creates a fresh tactical problem.

If Fallen Angel again goes forward without significant pressure, she has already shown how dangerous that scenario can be.

If the early pace is stronger, the race may suit a runner that settles behind the leaders before using its speed later.

Blue Bolt’s recent performances suggest she has become a stronger and more complete filly since last year’s defeat.

Understanding where the main runners are likely to sit is therefore as important as comparing their finishing positions.

Our guide to horse racing pace maps explains how to assess the likely shape of a race before the start.

Three-Year-Olds Against Older Fillies and Mares

One of the enduring attractions of the Sun Chariot is the clash between generations.

Three-year-olds carry 9st 2lb in 2026, while the older fillies and mares carry 9st 5lb.

That 3lb allowance recognises the remaining difference in physical maturity at this stage of the season.

It should not be treated as a reason to support a three-year-old automatically.

By October, the Classic generation has already had a long season. Some horses have been competing at the highest level since the spring, while older mares may have been campaigned more selectively.

Current condition matters.

True Love, Precise, Calendar Girl, Evolutionist, Moon Target and Secret Of Life represent the three-year-olds this year.

Blue Bolt, City Of Memphis, Fallen Angel, Kon Tiki, Love Dynasty and Pina Sonata make up the older group.

That even split gives the 2026 race a genuine generational contest.

The Matron Stakes Form

The Matron Stakes at Leopardstown is particularly relevant this year.

Blue Bolt won the 2026 Matron from City Of Memphis, with other Sun Chariot runners also involved.

It is an obvious piece of form to examine because the race is also a Group 1 over a mile for fillies and mares.

It should not be read in isolation.

Leopardstown and Newmarket present different tests. Leopardstown is a turning track, while the Sun Chariot is run over Newmarket’s straight Rowley Mile.

That change in course configuration can alter the result even when many of the same horses meet again.

The best approach is to examine how each horse ran at Leopardstown rather than simply copying the finishing order.

Ground Conditions

The going is currently good to firm.

That puts an emphasis on horses comfortable racing on a sound surface and reduces the likelihood that stamina will dominate purely because of testing ground.

Blue Bolt has already shown that quick conditions are not a problem.

Ground should still be checked on the morning of the race because Newmarket conditions can change, but the declared good-to-firm surface provides a clear starting point for analysing the field.

Our explanation of horse racing going covers how different ground descriptions can affect performance.

The previous BR page concentrated heavily on statistics such as the number of favourites to win during an arbitrary 12-year period.

That tells us less about the 2026 race than the actual form of the horses lining up.

This year’s field gives us several direct comparisons.

Blue Bolt has beaten City Of Memphis in the Matron Stakes.

Fallen Angel beat Blue Bolt in this race last year.

Blue Bolt has subsequently improved and now has the highest official rating in the field.

Precise and True Love have repeatedly competed at Group 1 level against members of this field.

Several less exposed runners arrive after recent victories.

Those are useful pieces of evidence because they relate directly to Saturday’s runners.

Our horse racing form guide explains how to read recent results in context rather than treating finishing position alone as the answer.

Sun Chariot Stakes 2026 Odds

There is now a live market for the declared 2026 field.

Blue Bolt is the clear market leader after her five-race winning sequence and victory over City Of Memphis in the Matron Stakes.

The important point is that a horse being the most likely winner and a horse representing value at its current price are not necessarily the same thing.

Blue Bolt has strong claims on form and ratings. The market knows that.

Anyone assessing the race from a betting perspective should therefore compare their own view of her winning chance with the available price rather than simply asking which horse has the best form.

Our guide to finding value bets in horse racing explains this distinction in more detail.

Prices can also move considerably between declaration day and the race itself, so compare the current market before placing a bet.

Comparing Bookmakers for the Sun Chariot

A Group 1 with a confirmed field is also a race where price comparison matters.

A small difference in price may look insignificant on one bet but has a direct effect on long-term returns.

Readers betting regularly on British racing can compare accounts through our Best Horse Racing Betting Sites page.

Mobile bettors can instead compare the racing features, usability and streaming options covered in our Best Horse Racing Betting Apps guide.

These pages serve different purposes. The betting-sites comparison focuses on the bookmaker overall, while the apps page concentrates on the mobile experience.

Best Odds Guaranteed

The Sun Chariot is still several days away, so the price available now may differ from the starting price on Saturday.

That makes the terms attached to a bet relevant as well as the headline odds.

Best Odds Guaranteed can protect eligible bets when the starting price is bigger than the qualifying price taken earlier, subject to the bookmaker’s terms.

Check the individual bookmaker’s rules before betting because eligibility and qualifying periods can differ.

Fallen Angel Won the 2025 Sun Chariot Stakes

Fallen Angel won the 2025 race for Karl Burke and James Doyle.

She made all over the Rowley Mile and defeated Blue Bolt by two and a quarter lengths, with favourite Cinderella’s Dream another four and a half lengths back in third.

The result is unusually relevant to the following year’s renewal because the first two meet again.

Blue Bolt was a three-year-old in 2025 and has improved significantly since.

Fallen Angel returns as a five-year-old with proven course-and-distance form and the tactical advantage of having already demonstrated exactly how she can win this race.

It gives the 2026 Sun Chariot a natural rematch at the centre of a much deeper field.

Tamfana Won in 2024

Tamfana won the 2024 Sun Chariot for David Menuisier and Colin Keane.

The three-year-old arrived with high-class form and secured her first Group 1 victory at Newmarket.

Her success continued the race’s long history of bringing together horses from the Classic generation with established older performers.

  • 2013: Sky Lantern, trained by Richard Hannon

The list shows the balance between three-year-olds and older horses rather than pointing towards a simple age rule.

Sahpresa’s Sun Chariot Hat-Trick

Sahpresa occupies a unique place in the race’s history.

The French-trained mare won three consecutive renewals between 2009 and 2011 for trainer Rod Collet.

Winning the same Group 1 three years running is exceptional, particularly in a race that regularly attracts a changing cast of leading fillies from successive generations.

Her record also demonstrates why the Sun Chariot has become an important target for older mares as well as three-year-old Classic performers.

Other Famous Winners

The race’s roll of honour extends well beyond its recent winners.

Attraction won in 2004 after a season that included victories in both the 1000 Guineas and Irish 1,000 Guineas.

Sky Lantern won in 2013, Laurens in 2018 and Billesdon Brook in 2019.

Earlier winners include Time Charter and Indian Skimmer.

The race itself is named after Sun Chariot, one of the outstanding fillies of British racing history. She won the 1000 Guineas, Oaks and St Leger in 1942.

History of the Sun Chariot Stakes

The Sun Chariot Stakes was first run in 1966.

It was originally restricted to three-year-old fillies and contested over ten furlongs.

Older fillies and mares became eligible in 1974.

The distance was reduced to its current mile in 2000, changing the character of the race and establishing it more firmly as an autumn championship event for female milers.

It was promoted to Group 1 status in 2004.

The modern race therefore differs considerably from its original version. Comparing recent winners with horses from the race’s earlier history needs to take those changes into account.

Leading Sun Chariot Trainers and Jockeys

Luca Cumani remains the race’s most successful trainer with six victories, including Free Guest’s consecutive wins in 1984 and 1985.

Sir Michael Stoute won four renewals, while Aidan O’Brien has also enjoyed repeated success in the modern mile version.

O’Brien is represented by Precise and True Love in 2026.

Lester Piggott is the leading jockey in the race’s history with six wins.

Ryan Moore won three times in four years aboard Integral, Alice Springs and Roly Poly.

The 2025 victory went to James Doyle aboard Fallen Angel, while Colin Keane, who won on Tamfana in 2024, rides Blue Bolt this year.

What Happens After the Sun Chariot?

The position of the race in early October gives connections several options.

Some horses finish their season at Newmarket.

Others continue to British Champions Day, travel to major international races or remain in training for later autumn targets.

The right route depends on the horse.

A filly that stays a mile strongly may be considered for another top-level mile, while others may be better suited by a different distance or international programme.

The Sun Chariot therefore acts both as an important Group 1 in its own right and as one of the final major pieces of evidence before the European Flat season reaches its climax.

How to Analyse the 2026 Sun Chariot Stakes

Start with the strongest recent Group 1 form.

Blue Bolt’s Matron victory gives her a clear position at the head of the field on both recent performance and official ratings.

Then examine the horses trying to reverse form with her.

City Of Memphis, Precise and True Love have all crossed paths with leading members of this field.

Fallen Angel requires a slightly different assessment. Her recent form is not as strong as Blue Bolt’s, but she is the defending champion and her front-running style could shape the entire race.

After that, look at the less exposed runners.

A horse does not need the strongest historical form if it is still improving quickly enough to reach a new level.

Finally, combine that assessment with:

  • Current form
  • Rowley Mile suitability
  • Ground
  • Pace
  • Weight-for-age
  • Draw and likely positioning
  • Trainer and jockey bookings
  • Current price

Our professional race analysis guide explains how to combine these factors without allowing one statistic to dictate the selection.
