Jockey Profile of Daryl Jacob

Daryl started his riding career as an apprentice for Trainer Dessie Hughes. After three years, he joined Robert and Sally Alner’s stable in Dorset, riding in point-to-points before turning professional.

In 2012, he was appointed second jockey to Ruby Walsh at the powerful Paul Nicholls stable. He gained the biggest win of his career when riding Neptune Collonges to a narrow victory in the 2012 Grand National.

Daryl Jacob – Key Jockey Stats

Daryl rode 49 winners in 2009-10 and would pass fifty winners for ten of the next eleven seasons. Daryl’s most prolific season came in 2016-17 with 88 winners. This beat his previous best of 83, set in the 2011-12 season. He has ridden three Cheltenham Festival victories: Zarkandar, 2011 Triumph Hurdle; Lac Fontana, 2014 County Handicap Hurdle; and Concertista, 2020 Dawn Run Mares Novices Hurdle.

Daryl Jacob Big Race Wins

Jacob’s first two big victories in Ireland both came aboard The Listener, winning the 2006 Savills Chase and the 2008 Irish Gold Cup. As the retained rider of owners Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, Jacob has enjoyed considerable success in major races. He won the Betfair Chase three times on the popular grey Bristol De Mai. Other winners for the same owners include Fusil Raffles (Champion four-year-old Hurdle), El Fabiolo (Arkle Novice Chase) and L’Ami Serge (Aintree Hurdle). All of these successes were eclipsed by his win on Neptune Collonges in the 2012 Grand National.

Daryl Jacob’s Most Famous Victories

Neptune Collonges started at 33-1 for the 2012 Grand National, despite having top-class form and being trained by Paul Nicholls. The grey had finished runner-up in the Grand National Trial at Haydock on his previous start, but he was largely overlooked. His victory came after a storming finish, catching Sunnyhillboy on the line to win by a nose. It was the first win in the race for his trainer and the first grey horse to win the National since Nicolaus Silver in 1961.

Bristol De Mai’s third win in the Betfair Chase at Haydock in 2020 was a memorable victory for Jacob. The horse started joint second favourite along with Clan Des Obeaux behind 7-4 favourite Lostintranslation. With the latter fading rapidly with three to jump, Bristol De Mai looked beaten when Clan Des Obeaux loomed up before the second last. Bristol De Mai kept responding to Jacob’s urgings and repelled the challenge to win by two lengths. The victory left the horse equal with Cue Card and one behind four-time race winner Kauto Star.

Summary

Daryl Jacob has been established as one of the leading jump jockeys for the past fifteen seasons.

He continues to ride the Munir/Souede horses and will remain a feature at the major festival meetings.
