Frankie Dettori Overview

Born in Milan, Italy in 1970, Dettori grew up in a family with deep connections to horse racing. His father, Gianfranco Dettori, was a successful jockey and trainer, and Frankie was raised around horses from a young age. Dettori began riding at the age of 13, and quickly showed a natural talent for the sport.

In 1985, at the age of 14, Dettori moved to the UK to begin his career as a jockey. He began working for the renowned trainer Luca Cumani, and quickly made a name for himself as a promising young rider.

In 1989, Dettori rode his first Group One winner in the Nunthorpe Stakes at York, aboard the filly Lyric Fantasy.

Throughout the 1990s, Dettori established himself as one of the top jockeys in the world. He won his first British Classic race in 1990, aboard Markofdistinction in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, and went on to win the race again in 1996 with Shaamit.

In 1995, Dettori achieved his greatest triumph when he won the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in France, one of the most prestigious races in the world, aboard the filly Lammtarra.

Dettori’s performance in the 1995 Arc de Triomphe has become the stuff of legend. Riding from an apparently impossible position at the back of the field, Dettori weaved his way through the pack and produced a stunning burst of speed in the home straight to win the race by two lengths. The win catapulted Dettori to international stardom, and he became known as the “flying jockey” for his daring and flamboyant riding style.

Throughout the rest of the 1990s and into the 2000s, Dettori continued to win major races around the world.

He won the Epsom Derby twice, in 2007 aboard Authorized and in 2015 aboard Golden Horn, and won the St. Leger Stakes, the oldest of the British Classic races, five times. He also won six King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, one of the most prestigious races in the UK, and seven Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, a top-level mile race run at Ascot.

Dettori has also had success on the international stage, winning major races in Europe, the United States, Japan, and Dubai. He has won the Breeders’ Cup Mile twice, in 1994 and 1995, and has won the Dubai World Cup, the world’s richest horse race, three times. In 2012, Dettori won the Irish Derby for the sixth time, aboard the colt Camelot.

Dettori’s success on the track has not gone unnoticed. He has been named Champion Jockey in Italy three times, and has been named British Champion Jockey three times as well.

He has won the Lester Award, which honors the top jockey in the UK, five times, and has been named the Longines World’s Best Jockey twice.

Frankie Dettori Awards

In addition to his accomplishments as a jockey, Dettori has also been recognized for his contributions to the sport of horse racing.

In 2015, he was awarded an honorary OBE (Order of the British Empire) for his services to horse racing, and in 2017 he was inducted into the Italian Racing Hall of Fame.

Dettori’s success on the track has also brought him a large following of fans, who appreciate not only his skill and talent as a rider, but also his charismatic and engaging personality.

Dettori is known for his signature flying dismount, in which he leaps off his horse after a win, and for his enthusiastic and animated interviews after races.

Despite his success, Dettori has faced his share of setbacks and challenges over the course of his career. In 2000, he was suspended from racing for six months after testing positive for a banned substance, and in 2012 he was suspended again, this time for 6 months for a positive test for cocaine. However, Dettori has always bounced back from these setbacks, and has continued to ride at the highest level of the sport.

Today, at the age of 52, Dettori shows no signs of slowing down. He remains one of the top jockeys in the world, and is still winning major races on a regular basis. In 2020, he won his sixth Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, a feat that few jockeys in history have ever achieved.

Looking back on his career, Dettori says that his greatest achievement is simply being able to continue doing what he loves. “I’m still enjoying it,” he said in an interview with CNN in 2019. “I still have the passion for it. I still have the drive to win. And that’s what keeps me going.”

Summary

As one of the most successful and charismatic jockeys in the history of horse racing, Frankie Dettori’s legacy is secure.

He has achieved more in the sport than most can ever dream of, and has inspired countless fans with his skill, talent, and showmanship.

And with his continued success and passion for the sport, it seems likely that Dettori will continue to be a force in the world of horse racing for many years to come.
