Relkeel Hurdle

Horses five years old and older may enter the Grade 2 Relkeel Hurdle, a National Hunt hurdle competition in Great Britain.

There are 10 hurdles to clear during the race, which is run over a distance of approximately 2 miles and 412 furlongs (2 miles 4 furlongs and 56 yards, or 4,074 metres), on the New Course at Cheltenham.

Every year, the race is set for New Year’s Day.

  • The Relkeel Hurdle is a Grade 1 National Hunt hurdle race in Great Britain which is open to horses aged four years or older.
  • It is run on the New Course at Cheltenham over a distance of about 3 miles (4,828 metres), and during its running there are twelve hurdles to be jumped.
  • The race is for novice hurdlers, and it is scheduled to take place each year during the Cheltenham Festival in March.
  • The event was established in 1971, and it was originally called the National Hunt Novices’ Hurdle.
  • It was given its present title in 1975, and for a period it was known as the Relkeel Novices’ Hurdle.
  • The race was promoted to Grade 1 status in 1980, and it has been sponsored by the Sun Alliance since 1987.
  • The race was first run in 1971, and it was named in honour of the racehorse Relkeel who won the race in 1974.
