Key Stats of S.Bowen

Jockey Profile – Sean Bowen

Sean is the son of leading Welsh National Hunt trainer Peter Bowen and brother of fellow jockey James. Despite being born into a racing yard, Sean’s enthusiasm for horses was tempered by an outbreak of eczema. He suffered from an allergy to horses which miraculously disappeared when he was 7 years old.

Once the allergy was behind him, he was able to ride ponies along with his brother James and he became totally focussed on a career as a jockey.

He spent much of his youth riding a mechanical horse, playing Champion Jockey computer games and riding in pony races. He was spotted by Champion trainer Paul Nicholls when riding in amateur point-to-point races for his father and joined the powerful Ditcheat stable, becoming Champion conditional jockey in 2014-15.

Sean Bowen – Key Jockey Stats

Sean was an instant success from the moment he joined the Nicholls yard, claiming the conditional jockeys title in his first season and riding 51 winners in a calendar year.

He also finished eleventh on his first Grand National ride in the same season and won the 2015 Bet365 Gold Cup on Just A Par.

Bowen’s services were snapped up by Trainer Harry Fry in 2019 to replace the retiring Noel Fehily.

He has maintained steady progress, his most prolific year coming in 2018-19 with 91 winners. His first Grade 1 victory came aboard If The Cap Fits for Fry in the 2019 Liverpool Hurdle.

In August 2021 it was announced that he would no longer be the retained stable jockey for the stable.

Bowen posted a career-best 94 winners in 2021-22 but is certain to pass that total in 2022-23.

Sean Bowen’s Big Race Wins

Bowen won his first significant prize for Nicholls aboard Ulck Du Lin in the Byrne Group Handicap Chase at Ascot in November 2014.

Further handicap success followed on Southfield Vic, Virak and Lil Rockerfeller and his claim was down to 3lbs by the time he won the valuable Bet365 Handicap Chase on Just A Par at Sandown in April 2015.

He continued to thrive despite losing his claim and rode his first Grade 2 winner on El Bandit in the Persian War Novices’ Hurdle in 2016. He later rode Clan Des Obeaux to victory in the Berkshire Novices’ Chase and guided As De Mee over the Aintree Grand National fences to win the Grand Sefton Chase. Bowen won a second Bet365 Gold Cup on Henllan Harri in 2017, a 40-1 chance trained by his father.

Sean rode another Nicholls-trained superstar in Cyrname, winning the Grade 2 Pendil Novices’ Chase and Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase. He won the Grand Sefton for a second time on Warrior’s Tale in 2018 and claimed his first Grade 1 aboard If The Cap Fits in the Liverpool Hurdle in 2019.

In 2022 he rode Grand National winner Noble Yeats to victory in the Grade 2 Many Clouds Chase.

Sean Bowen’s Most Famous Victories

The Bet365 Gold Cup win on Just A Par in 2015 was a major breakthrough for Bowen. The horse lost his position after a mistake at the eleventh fence but Bowen refused to panic and produced the gelding with strong run between the last two fences to beat Irish raider Vics Canvas.

His victory in the same race on his father’s Henllan Harri in 2017 will always hold special memories for the family. The horse was completely overlooked in the betting after a modest third at Ffos Las on his previous start. Bowen set out to make all the running and held on grimly in a four-way photograph from Vyta Du Roc, Theatre Guide and Benbens.

Bowen also had to be at his strongest on If The Cap Fits in the Liverpool Hurdle in 2019. A bad mistake at the final flight handed the advantage to Roksana and Apple’s Jade but Bowen picked him up and drove him between the pair to win by a head and a neck.

Summary of Jumps Jockey Sean Bowen

Sean Bowen is one of the strongest riders in a finish and it is surely only a matter of time before he records his first Cheltenham Festival winner.

He is currently lying second in the British Jump Jockeys table and is on course for another successful season.
