Trainer Profile – Alan King

Alan King is a Lanarkshire-born trainer best known for his National Hunt success.

In recent seasons he has expanded his flat racing interests, largely due to the exploits of Group 1 winning stayer Trueshan.

Alan King

King originally worked in his native Scotland for John Wilson at Cree Lodge.

He then worked as an assistant trainer to the powerful David Nicholson stable before obtaining his own licence.

Originally based at Jackdaw’s Castle, he moved to Barbury Castle in 2000.

Alan King – Key Trainer Stats

King has trained sixteen Cheltenham Festival winners including four of the five most prestigious races at the meeting. The only one to elude him to date is the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

He has trained more than 100 winners in a season on three occasions, the most recent being in 2016-17 (104).

His most prolific season was in 2008-09 with 136 winners.

His horses have earned more than £1 million in prize money in a season on eleven occasions.

In 2007-08 they earned more than £2.1 million.

Alan King’s Big Race Wins

King’s first Cheltenham Festival winner was Fork Lightning in the 2004 Festival Trophy. He landed the Arkle Trophy with Voy Por Ustedes two years’ later, the same horse winning the 2007 Champion Chase.

Katchit was another dual Cheltenham Festival winner for King, taking the 2007 Triumph Hurdle and the 2008 Champion Hurdle.

My Way de Solzen won the Stayers Hurdle in 2006 and dropped back in trip to win the 2007 Arkle.

The yard won the race for a third time with Edwardstone in 2022.

King has also enjoyed plenty of success at the Aintree Grand National meeting, although he has gone on record as not being a fan of the big race itself. He has won the Liverpool Hurdle three times, most recently with Yanworth in 2017.

Trueshan victories in the Goodwood Cup and Prix du Cadran in 2021 have illustrated King’s ability to train at the highest level on the flat as well as over jumps.

Alan King – Most Famous Victories

Katchit was a small but tough hurdler who bucked the modern trend for Triumph Hurdle winners failing to make the grade in the Champion Hurdle. A modest performer on the flat for Mick Channon, he was snapped up for £30,000 by King and went on to beat 23 rivals in the Triumph. He was pitted against the best the following year, winning the Kingwell Hurdle before battling to Champion Hurdle success at odds of 10-1.

Trueshan has been the stable’s flag bearer on the flat, the regular mount of Hollie Doyle. His major victories include the Goodwood Cup, British Champions Long Distance Cup, Northumberland Plate and Prix du Cadran. He was named Cartier Champion Stayer in 2021.

Summary of Trainer Alan King

Alan King ended a 7-year drought at the Cheltenham Festival when Edwardstone won the 2022 Arkle.

His recent success on the flat will offer encouragement for him to plunder more top prizes on the level.
