Probert revealed a natural talent for riding at an early age and was soon competing in pony racing and gymkhana.

He then attended the British Racing School in Newmarket before joining the Balding stable at Kingsclere.

His first winner under rules was Mountain Pass for Welsh Trainer John Llewellyn in 2007.

David Probert – Key Jockey Stats

Probert shared the 2008 British Champion Apprentice title with William Buick, another leading jockey to emerge from the Balding camp.

He has been a prolific jockey ever since, recording his first century in a season in 2014.

He rode a career-best 112 winners in 2019 and is set to pass that total comfortably in 2021.

In 2016 Probert rode his first four-timer at Brighton at accumulative odds in excess of 8000-1.

David Probert’s Big Race Wins

Probert rode the well-backed Dancing Star to win the Stewards’ Cup for Jeff Smith and Andrew Balding in 2016.

Most of his big-race successes have been for Balding, including Group 2 victories aboard Bangkok (York Stakes) and Sandrine (Duchess of Cambridge Stakes) in 2021.

He has also won the Group 3 Sweet Solera Stakes on Majestic Glory and the Albany Stakes on Sandrine.

His first Group race victories abroad and in Britain both came aboard Balding’s Highland Knight in 2012. Highland Knight won the Darley Oettingen-Rennen at Baden-Baden, a race Probert would later win on Here Comes When for the same stable in 2015.

One of the best horses he has ridden was one-time Derby favourite Elm Park who won the Listed Stonehenge Stakes at Salisbury as a two-year-old.

David Probert’s Most Famous Victories

Probert’s win on 9-2 Stewards’ Cup favourite Dancing Star in 2016 was a very important victory for him and the horse’s connections. He had ridden the filly to success in a valuable handicap at Newmarket on her previous start and retained the ride for the big Goodwood sprint.

Dancing Star was related to Lochsong who had won the race in the same colours 24 years’ earlier.

Bangkok’s surprise 14-1 success in the 2021 Sky Bet York Stakes was a perfect demonstration of Probert’s talents. The five-year-old is well known to take a fierce hold in his races and was expected to run out of steam behind hot favourite Mohaafeth and Aidan O’Brien’s Armory. In a slowly-run race, Probert managed to keep enough in reserve to repel Juan Elcano and Mohaafeth by a head and a neck in a thrilling finish.

As the Co-Founder of British Racecourses, I love the chance to share my enjoyment of racing with others. As a family, we have always loved the racing and went to Haydock races as kids, as often as we could. We are now lucky enough to own some fantastic racehorses who we will follow around the tracks and we have had some great wins. As part of British Racecourses, I enjoy visiting and reviewing the racecourses that we visit, all of which I think have something to offer and are brilliant in their own ways.
