Famous Devenish Chase Winners

The Devenish Chase was introduced in 2018 with victory going to the prolific chaser Un De Sceaux. He won this race as a ten-year-old towards the end of a glittering career for Willie Mullins. He won 23 of his 34 career starts and over £1.5 million in prize money.

Un De Sceaux is probably best remembered for his dazzling win in the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham in 2017 and his three successive wins in the Clarence House Chase at Ascot (2016-2018). His other notable successes include the Arkle Chase (2015), the Tingle Creek Chase (2016) and the Punchestown Champion Chase (2018, 2019).

Jett won here in 2019 for Jessica Harrington before Mullins and Easy Game assumed control of the event. Brian Hayes rode the gelding to victory in 2021 and 2022 with Paul Townend aboard for his latest success in 2023. He was fortunate to complete the hat-trick with odds-on stablemate Janidil falling at the last when six lengths clear and well on top. Strangely it was almost a repeat of the 2022 renewal when Janadil came down at the seventh, although he only held a narrow lead at the time.

Key Devenish Chase Trials

Janadil had twice been beaten in the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham prior to starting favourite here. Un De Sceaux also came here via the Ryanair in 2018. He was beaten by Balko Des Flos at the Festival before winning this race by 18 lengths. He then won the Punchestown Champion Chase over two miles.

Two favourites have obliged in the first five seasons of the Devenish Chase; Un De Sceaux (2018) at 5-6 and Easy Game (2021) at 11-8. The latter returned at 15-2 (2022) and 2-1 (2023) for his other two victories. Jett (2019) was returned at 7-1. Un De Sceaux was the oldest winner to date at the age of ten with other winners ranging from seven to nine.

Devenish Chase – Top Trainers and Jockeys

Willie Mullins has won four of the first five renewals; Un De Sceaux (2018) and Easy Game (2021, 2022, 2023). He is often represented by more than one runner in this race and his Janadil might well have won this race twice had he not fallen. He did not have a runner in 2019 when Jessica Harrington’s Jett defeated The Storyteller.

Betting on the Devenish Chase

The Devenish Chase is still a relatively new event but is already on the radar for the powerful Willie Mullins stable. It fits nicely into the schedule between the Cheltenham and Punchestown Festivals and we can expect the yard to maintain their dominance.
