Trainer Profile – Gary Moore

Gary is the son of Brighton Trainer Charlie Moore and father of three-time Champion flat jockey Ryan Moore. Gary is also the father of Jamie, Joshua, and Hayley, who have also forged careers as jockeys.

Gary was a good jumps rider in his own right with 150 winners, mostly on his local tracks, Plumpton and Fontwell Park. He rode his first winner aboard Jamie’s Cottage at Plumpton in 1973 and turned professional five years later.

He started training in Brighton before moving to Cisswood Racing Stables near Horsham in 2007 and has now trained over 1100 winners.

The horse which put him on the map was Sire De Grugy, a bold-jumping chestnut who won many top races, including the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

More recently, he has hit the headlines with the hurdler Goshen.

Gary Moore’s best-ever season came in 2021-22 when he sent out 91 winners, earning prize money over £1.1 million.

His best previous tally had been 63 winners in the 2005-06 season.

Moore has also trained a variety of winners on the flat, ranging from Dutch Masterpiece in the Group 2 Flying Five Stakes at the Curragh to Bergo in the marathon Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot.

He also trained Mourilyan to finish third in the Melbourne Cup.

Gary Moore Big Race Wins

Sire De Grugy had always shown promise over hurdles, finishing third in the Imperial Cup in 2012. He was put over fences the following season when he won the Grade 2 Celebration Chase at Sandown. 2013-14 was his stellar season, marked by victories in the Tingle Creek, Desert Orchid, and Clarence House Chase.

Starting 11-4 favourite, he then won the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival with Jamie Moore in the saddle. He rounded off his season with a second Celebration Chase success. Sire de Grugy won a second Tingle Creek in 2015 when defeating Special Tiara by three-quarters of a length.

Gary Moore – Most Famous Victories

The 2014 Champion Chase victory of Sire de Grugy has to be the highlight of Gary Moore’s training career. To see his stable star moving sweetly behind the leaders before Jamie unleashed him at the second last must have given him enormous pleasure. The popular chestnut stayed on firmly to beat Somersby by six lengths.

Plenty has been written about Goshen’s unseating Jamie at the last flight in the 2020 Triumph Hurdle. Gary has been fierce in defence of both horse and rider ever since and has never lost faith in Goshen. His wide-margin win in the 2021 Kingwell Hurdle resurrected Champion Hurdle hopes, but he ultimately disappointed at the Festival meeting. He won the Kingwell for a second time in 2022 as well as the Ascot Hurdle.
