Philip Hobbs

Philip tried his hand at show jumping as a youngster before riding a few point-to-point winners.

He then rode as an amateur jumps jockey before turning professional, riding 160 winners.

Philip Hobbs – Key Trainer Stats

Hobbs enjoyed his most prolific season in 2002-03 when sending out 134 winners.

He likes to set himself a target of 100 winners each season, something he has now achieved 14 times.

The yard’s horses have earned over £900,000 in all but two of the last 21 seasons. On 18 occasions total earnings topped £1 million, the highest being £1.63 million in 2005-06.

Hobbs has an impressive 19 Cheltenham Festival winners to his credit including three Triumph Hurdles. He won it with Made In Japan (2004), Detroit City (2006) and Defi du Seuil (2017).

He trained Balthazar King to win the Cross Country Chase in 2012 and 2014, the horse later finishing runner-up in the 2014 Grand National.

Philip Hobbs Big Race Wins

Rooster Booster stands out among the many great horses to pass through the Hobbs stable. The grey worked his way up the handicap, landing the 2002 County Hurdle and Greatwood Hurdle before stepping up to the highest level. He added the Bula Hurdle and Agfa Hurdle before a resounding success in the 2003 Champion Hurdle.

Flagship Uberalles won the Tingle Creek Chase three times, each time in the care of a different trainer. Hobbs trained him for the highlight of his career, winning the Queen Mother Champion Chase in 2002. He also won the 2003 Punchestown Champion Chase with the gelding.

Philip Hobbs – Most Famous Victories

Rooster Booster’s 11 lengths win in the 2003 Cheltenham Champion Hurdle has to be the highlight of Hobbs’s career. The grey improved his rating by 26lbs during the course of the season.

Defi Du Seuil gave Hobbs some memorable moments, notably his Triumph Hurdle victory in 2017.

For those who have been suggesting a decline in the Hobbs fortunes, the 16-1 success of Zanza in the 2023 Denman Chase was a fitting way to bring up his 3000.

There are plans for assistant trainer Johnson White to join Hobbs on the licence at the end of the 2022-23 season but he has no intention of retiring just yet.

Summary of Jumps Trainer Phillip Hobbs

Philip Hobbs made a poor start to the 2022-23 season by his standards but is already planning changes for next year.

He will undoubtedly continue to make his presence felt among the leading trainers for a few more years yet.
