Trainer Profile of Joseph O’Brien

Joseph is the son of leading Irish Trainer Aidan O’Brien and never has the saying “a chip off the old block” been more appropriate.

He rode his first winner on his father’s Johann Zoffany at Leopardstown in 2009 and was co-champion apprentice in Ireland in 2010.

He rode Roderic O’Connor to win the Irish 2000 Guineas the following year.

In 2012, he won the English 2000 Guineas and the Epsom Derby aboard Camelot, narrowly failing to pull off the elusive Triple Crown when second in the St Leger.

He also won the Derby on Australia for his father in 2014. Joseph was champion jockey in Ireland in 2012 and 2013.

He retired from the saddle in 2016 to take up training and had his first Group 1 winner with Intricately in the Moyglare Stud Stakes the same year.

Joseph O’Brien – Key Trainer Stats

Joseph was twice Champion flat jockey of Ireland, setting a new record of 126 winners in 2013.

He was always going to struggle to maintain his weight and it came as no surprise when he made the change to training. He made an immediate impact under both codes.

He trained 23 winners on the flat in his first season, 52 in 2017 and recorded the first of five consecutive centuries in 2018. He almost broke the 1 million euros barrier in his second campaign and all five subsequent years yielded in excess of 2.6 million euros.

His National Hunt stats also make impressive reading, saddling 88 winners in only his third season.

Joseph O’Brien’s Big Race Wins

His achievement of winning the Melbourne Cup, not once but twice, has to stand at the top of his CV.

Ironically he defeated his father’s horse when winning it for the first time with Rekindling in 2017 and then struck again with Twilight Payment three years’ later.

The globetrotting performances of State Of Rest typify his willingness to travel for the big prizes. The horse has won the Saratoga Derby, the Prix Ganay, the Cox Plate and the Prince of Wales’s Stakes.

He won the Irish Derby twice as a jockey and trained Latrobe to win it in 2018.

He secured his first English Classic in the 2020 St Leger with Galileo Chrome.

He has three Cheltenham Festival winners under his belt as well as numerous other top National Hunt prizes.

Joseph O’Brien – Most Famous Victories

Rekindling’s Melbourne Cup victory was notable as he became the youngest winner of the race in 76 years.

He had won the Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown but was beaten in the Dante and finished well down the field at Epsom.

He later finished a creditable fourth in the St Leger before being sent to Flemington. He won at 14-1, beating Aidan’s Johannes Vermeer by half a length.

Galileo Chrome won the St Leger behind closed doors in 2020 due to the covid pandemic. He had only raced once as a juvenile but shot up through the ranks at three, winning all four starts culminating in the Doncaster Classic.

Summary of Trainer Joseph O’Brien

Joseph O’Brien established himself immediately as a trainer and has shown that he is equally adept with both flat racers and jumpers.

He is very astute at placing his horses and looks destined to go to the very top.
