The five-day festival takes place in late July/early August at the stunning Goodwood racecourse and always attracts many of the top performers from the Royal meeting.
There are three Group 1 races; Sussex Stakes, Nassau Stakes and Goodwood Cup. The Sussex Stakes is the highlight of the week, often featuring the top milers in Europe.

Qatar Glorious Festival Day 1
The main races of the first day of the Goodwood Festival are:
Goodwood Cup History & Famous Winners
The Goodwood Cup was first run in 1808 over three miles. The race was gradually shortened until settling at two miles in 1991.
The race was given Group 1 status in 2017 when prize money was increased to £500,000.
Stradivarius (2017-2020) became the first horse in history to win the Goodwood Cup four times. John Gosden’s popular stayer surpassed the record of Double Trigger (1995, 1997, 1998).
Other multiple winners of this race include Persian Punch (2001, 2003), Yeats (2006, 2007) and Big Orange (2015, 2016).
The Group 2 Vintage Stakes for two-year-olds over seven furlongs has been won by several subsequent Classic winners.
The roll of honour includes Epsom Derby winners Troy (1978), Dr Devious (1991) and Sir Percy (2005) and 2000 Guineas winners Don’t Forget Me (1986), Mister Baileys (1993) and Galileo Gold (2015).
Highland Reel (2014) and Expert Eye (2017) both went on to win Breeders’ Cup races.
The Lennox Stakes is one of the top seven-furlong races of the season.
David Elsworth’s Sir Dancealot (2018, 2019) became only the second horse to win the race twice following Nayyir (2002, 2003). Space Blues was a well-backed winner in 2020 and favourites have a good record in the Lennox Stakes.
A notable exception was Breton Rock in 2017 who sprang a 50-1 shock.
Qatar Glorious Festival Day 2
The races on day two at Goodwood racecourse are as follows:
Sussex Stakes History & Famous winners
The Group 1 Sussex Stakes is the feature race on day 2, a race which carried prize money of £1 million in 2019.
Notable past winners of this race include Kris (1979), Zilzal (1989), Giant’s Causeway (2000) and Rock Of Gibraltar (2002).
The most famous winner of the Sussex Stakes was Frankel (2011, 2012), the only horse to achieve two victories in this race.
The 2020 Sussex Stakes produced a dramatic finish as Mohaather overcame trouble in running to pass Circus Maximus and Siskin in the dying strides. Unfortunately, his career was cut short by injury and he was retired to stud without racing again.
The Group 3 Molecomb Stakes is for two-year-olds over five furlongs.
Notable past winners include Marwell (1980), Risky (1993), Kachy (2015) and Yalta (2016).
Steel Bull provided Ireland with a rare victory in the race in 2020, trained by Michael O’Callaghan and ridden by Colin Keane.
Qatar Goodwood Festival Day 3
The day’s races are as follows:
Nassau Stakes History & Famous winners
The third day of the Goodwood Festival is traditionally known as Ladies’ Day and features the Nassau Stakes for fillies and mares aged three and over.
The race was elevated to Group 1 status in 1999.
The late Sir Henry Cecil trained Midday to a remarkable hat-trick of Nassau Stakes victories between 2009 and 2011.
Other famous names on the roll of honour include Ouija Board (2006), The Fugue (2012) and Minding (2016).
There was a major surprise in the Nassau Stakes in 2019 when Japanese trained Deirdre struck at 20-1. She returned to Goodwood in 2020 but failed to land a blow behind Fancy Blue.
The Group 2 Richmond Stakes is for two-year-old colts and geldings over six furlongs.
Bachir (1999) went on to win the Irish 2000 Guineas the following season.
The last horse to win the Richmond Stakes and go on to win an English Classic was Palestine who won the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in 1950.
The Group 3 Gordon Stakes is for three-year-olds over a mile and a half and is a recognised trial for the St Leger.
Trainer Sir Michael Stoute has won this race a record ten times, most recently with Crystal Ocean (2017). Millenary (2000), Sixties Icon (2006) and Conduit (2008) all went on to win the season’s final Classic.
Qatar Goodwood Festival Day 4
The day’s races are as follows:
King George Stakes History & Famous Winners
The Group 2 King George Stakes over five furlongs is the feature race on day 4.
Battaash emulated Stradivarius’s achievement in the Goodwood Cup by chalking up a fourth successive victory in the King George. He was trained by Charles Hills and ridden by Jim Crowley on all four occasions.
Shock results are very rare in the King George with Take Cover (2016) at 8-1 being the longest priced winner in the past ten years. He was winning the race for a second time at the age of nine.
Other notable winners include Soba (1983), Lochsong (1993, 1994) and Kingsgate Native (2009).
Oak Tree Stakes
The Oak Tree Stakes is for fillies and mares over seven furlongs.
There have been several surprise winners here including Amy Eria (2015) at 33-1, Anecdote (2013) at 14-1 and Tropical Paradise (2010) at 16-1.
Favourite One Master gave punters something to cheer about in 2020 but only caught Valeria Messalina in the final stride.
The Golden Mile is one of the most valuable handicaps of the season and always attracts a competitive field.
Successful recent gambles include Franklin D (2016) at 7-4, Seniority (2018) at 9-2 and Prompting (2020) at 3-1. Seniority was owned by Her Majesty The Queen and provided jockey Ryan Moore with his third successive win in the race.
High numbers are at a big disadvantage here, racing wide into the race’s only turn.
Qatar Goodwood Festival Day 5
The day’s racing is as follows:
Stewards’ Cup History & Famous Winners
The Stewards’ Cup over six furlongs is the big betting race of the week.
It is one of the most valuable sprint handicaps of the season with several past winners going on to win Group 1 races. Lochsong (1992), Coastal Bluff (1996), Danetime (1997) and Borderlescott (2006) all went on to win at the highest level.
Improving three-year-olds Magical Memory (2015), Dancing Star (2016) and Khaadem (2019) were all well-backed favourites in this race.
There have also been plenty of shock results here including Conquest (2008) at 40-1, Lancelot Du Lac (2017) at 25-1 and Summerghand (2020) at 22-1.
There is also a consolation Stewards’ Cup called the Stewards’ Sprint for horses who did not make the cut for the feature race.
Lillie Langtry Stakes
The Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes is for fillies and mares over a mile and three-quarters.
Enbihaar (2019, 2020) became the third dual winner of the race following Tartouche (2005, 2006) and Wild Coco (2012, 2013).
Best Trainers & Jockeys at Glorious Goodwood
