Glorious Goodwood, also known as the Qatar Goodwood Festival, is second only to Royal Ascot in the British summer racing calendar.
The five-day festival is one of the highlights of the flat racing season and takes place from Tuesday 1st August to Saturday 5th August 2023 at the stunning Goodwood racecourse and always attracts many of the top performers and best equine athletes from the Royal meeting.
There are three Group 1 races; Sussex Stakes, Nassau Stakes and Goodwood Cup. The Sussex Stakes is the highlight of the week, often featuring the top milers in Europe.

The roll of honour includes Epsom Derby winners Troy (1978), Dr Devious (1991) and Sir Percy (2005) and 2000 Guineas winners Don’t Forget Me (1986), Mister Baileys (1993) and Galileo Gold (2015).

Lennox Stakes
The Lennox Stakes is one of the top seven-furlong races of the season.
David Elsworth’s Sir Dancealot (2018, 2019) became only the second horse to win the race twice following Nayyir (2002, 2003). Space Blues was a well-backed winner in 2020 and favourites have a good record in the Lennox Stakes.
A notable exception was Breton Rock in 2017 who sprang a 50-1 shock.

Goodwood Cup
The Goodwood Cup was first to run in 1808 over three miles. The race was gradually shortened until settling at two miles in 1991.
The race was given Group 1 status in 2017 when prize money was increased to £500,000.
Stradivarius (2017-2020) became the first horse in history to win the Goodwood Cup four times. John Gosden’s popular stayer surpassed the record of Double Trigger (1995, 1997, 1998).
Other multiple winners of this race include Persian Punch (2001, 2003), Yeats (2006, 2007) and Big Orange (2015, 2016).

Favourite One Master gave punters something to cheer about in 2020 but only caught Valeria Messalina in the final stride.

Molecomb Stakes
The Group 3 Molecomb Stakes is for two-year-olds over five furlongs.
Notable past winners include Marwell (1980), Risky (1993), Kachy (2015) and Yalta (2016).
Steel Bull provided Ireland with a rare victory in the race in 2020, trained by Michael O’Callaghan and ridden by Colin Keane.

The most famous winner of the Sussex Stakes was Frankel (2011, 2012), the only horse to achieve two victories in this race.
The 2020 Sussex Stakes produced a dramatic finish as Mohaather overcame trouble in running to pass Circus Maximus and Siskin in the dying strides. Unfortunately, his career was cut short by injury and he retired to stud without racing again.

Bachir (1999) went on to win the Irish 2000 Guineas the following season.

King George Stakes
The Group 2 King George Stakes over five furlongs is the feature race on day 4.
Battaash emulated Stradivarius’s achievement in the Goodwood Cup by chalking up a fourth successive victory in the King George. He was trained by Charles Hills and ridden by Jim Crowley on all four occasions.
Shock results are very rare in the King George with Take Cover (2016) at 8-1 being the longest priced winner in the past ten years. He was winning the race for a second time at the age of nine.
Other notable winners include Soba (1983), Lochsong (1993, 1994) and Kingsgate Native (2009).

Golden Mile
The Golden Mile is one of the most valuable handicaps of the season and always attracts a competitive field.
Successful recent gambles include Franklin D (2016) at 7-4, Seniority (2018) at 9-2 and Prompting (2020) at 3-1. Seniority was owned by Her Majesty The Queen and provided jockey Ryan Moore with his third successive win in the race.
High numbers are at a big disadvantage here, racing wide into the race’s only turn.
Qatar Goodwood Festival Day 5 – Steward’s Cup Day
The day’s racing for the final day of Goodwood is as follows:
Stewards’ Cup History & Famous Winners
The Stewards Cup over six furlongs is the big betting race of the week.
It is one of the most valuable sprint handicaps of the season with several past winners going on to win Group 1 races. Lochsong (1992), Coastal Bluff (1996), Danetime (1997) and Borderlescott (2006) all went on to win at the highest level.
Improving three-year-olds Magical Memory (2015), Dancing Star (2016) and Khaadem (2019) were all well-backed favourites in this race.
There have also been plenty of shock results here including Conquest (2008) at 40-1, Lancelot Du Lac (2017) at 25-1 and Summerghand (2020) at 22-1.
There is also a consolation Stewards Cup called the Stewards’ Sprint for horses who did not make the cut for the feature race.
Lillie Langtry Stakes
The Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes is for fillies and mares over a mile and three-quarters.
Enbihaar (2019, 2020) became the third dual winner of the race following Tartouche (2005, 2006) and Wild Coco (2012, 2013).
