Famous Middleton Fillies Stakes Winners
The Middleton Fillies Stakes was first run in 1981 and was initially restricted to three-year-olds.
The inaugural running was won by Pipina, trained by Harry Wragg and ridden by Pat Eddery. The race was restricted to older fillies in 1997 and was promoted from Group 3 to Group 2 status in 2010.
1990 winner Hellenic went on to win the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot and later returned to the Knavesmire to win the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks. Sir Michael Stoute let her take her chance in the St Leger at Doncaster where she was just run out of it by Snurge. Promising Lead also won this race for Stoute, later adding the Pretty Polly Stakes.
In 2010 the Middleton was won by Sariska who had won the Epsom Oaks and was named European Champion Three-year-old filly in 2009. She also won the Irish Oaks before finishing second to Dar Re Mi in the Yorkshire Oaks.
Midday (2011) won the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood for three successive seasons from 2009 to 2011. She also won the Yorkshire Oaks, Prix Vermeille and the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf.
John Gosden’s Coronet (2018) had won the Ribblesdale the previous season. She went on to win the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and Prix Jean Romanet.
