2022 Cheltenham Festival Best Chances for Dan Skelton

Here are the best chances and picks from the Dan Skelton yard for the Cheltenham Festival 2022.

Shan Blue (Ryanair Chase)

Dan Skelton is happy with Shan Blue after his fall at Wetherby when looking the likely winner that day.

“I’m super happy with him. We know we can have him well fresh, so he’s going to go straight to the Ryanair. He’s a bigger, stronger and better horse than when running at Cheltenham in the past. He wasn’t that far behind when we rode in way too aggressively at last year’s Festival and I have no concerns about him handling the track.”

A great each-way pick in the Ryanair Chase – Allaho who is one of Willie Mullins’s Cheltenham Festival fancies will be tough to beat-  but Shan Blue should run well and we fancy him to hit the frame.

Third Time Lucki (Arkle Chase)

Leaving him on the list (in case he does run in the Arkle) is Third Time Lucki who we like a lot. At the moment it is highly unlikely we will be running at Cheltenham races this year and according to recent trainer quotes by Dan Skelton, he might be bypassing Cheltenham to go straight to Aintree. If he doesn’t it should be noted.

“I’ve spoken to Mike [Newbould, Aintree] and I’m 99 per cent certain he will go to Aintree. We may confirm him for the Arkle in case it is a dry forecast but I’m pretty sure he will go to Aintree.”

Elle Est Belle (Mares Novices Hurdle)

Another who would have a great chance at Cheltenham Races but might be bypassing to go straight to Aintree.

The recent trainer quote by Dan Skelton was.

“I’m not running Elle Est Belle in the race but I won’t scratch her immediately as I’ve said all along that I’m pretty sure she will go to Aintree. Nothing is distracting me from that. I think it is the right thing to go two and a half miles there. Two miles at Cheltenham could just get her at it. Instead of going to the mares’ novices’ hurdle at Cheltenham giving away weight she can go against the boys at Aintree on a track that suits her better, on a trip that suits her better, getting seven pounds off the boys who might have gone to Cheltenham and had a hard race.”

Too Friendly (Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle)

An official rating of 90 on the flat shows Too Friendly has loads of speed and if he jumps nicely could have a serious chance in the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle. Dan Skelton on a recent stable tour said as much:

“Too Friendly has got a good profile for the race I think. He is a 90 rated Flat horse so he has got absolutely chunks of ability. He has run in some good hurdles this autumn. His last run was at Doncaster where he wasn’t too far behind Knight Salute who is one of the leading English hopes for the Triumph Hurdle. We have given Too Friendly a wind operation as I would rather have that and not need it than not have it and need it.”

Doctor Parnassus (JCB Triumph Hurdle)

An each-way chance in the Triumph Hurdle his last run shows he will stay the trip nicely.

“It’s getting close to Cheltenham and I just thought ‘no, take the best route you can’. So I ran him over an extended trip, just to almost prove his stamina and get him used to sort of racing a bit of a distance because the Triumph Hurdle winner has got to stay. He was a little on it for a mile but then relaxed, jumped very well and quickened up.”

He’s not one of those horses who will face that hill and whimper out; he will put his head down and have a go. I think that gives him a squeak in the Triumph Hurdle.

Ballygrifincottage (Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle)

A long shot for the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle Dan Skelton said this about Ballygrifincottage chances.

“This race doesn’t turn into a classy affair but a slugging match. I think he is well able to get involved in that type of scenario. Whether he is quite classy enough from three out to the last I don’t know.”

West Cork (McCoy Contractors County Hurdle)

The County Hurdle is always an open betting event for horse racing bettors and Dan Skelton has a live chance in West Cork.

“He worked really well this morning and is on course for the County Hurdle. We can get him ready fresh. I was very happy for 90% of the journey at Ascot as I thought he travelled brilliantly in a very fast run race before fading. I know him inside out. It’s nice to have a horse that you know you can have really well fresh going into the race like that. You can trust your horse, trust your system.”

Unexpected Party (Coral Cup)

In a recent stable tour, Dan Skelton was showing confidence in thinking Unexpected Party could be a Graded horse in a handicap race. If that is the case, he will have an excellent chance in the Coral Cup. Here is what Dan had to say:

“In my opinion you need a graded horse in a handicap to win and hopefully he is that class. If there wasn’t a Cheltenham Festival after Ascot you would have all expected me to go a graded route with this horse. You can see why we think Unexpected Party is the right type of horse for it. He will handle the track no problem. He got beat there back in November through lack of experience but he has improved and improved. You can see Unexpected Party looks fantastic.”

Langer Dan (Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle)

Langer Dan was unlucky to run into the hugely talented Galopin Des Champs in a handicap last year and is tipped to go one better this year in the Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle.

“Langer Dan is in good form. We didn’t do anything with him in the autumn but we’ve got going now. He’s going to the conditional jockeys’ race again.”

Nube Negra (Queen Mother Champion Chase)

A very talented horse Nube Negra would have a great chance in recent years.

But this year’s Champion Chase looks the strongest on paper and according to horse racing tipsters it has ever been.

Dan Skelton confirms Nube Negra is in great form but sees a difficult challenge ahead.

“Nube Negra was second in the Champion Chase last year. OK, Chacun Pour Soi has proved to be a significantly better horse on his side of the Irish Sea, so perhaps his run in last year’s Champion Chase isn’t true to what he can really do. We’ve never faced them two from Ascot [Shishkin and Energumene]. On numbers they’re obviously achieving very highly so we know it’s not going to be easy, but the best we can do is have our horses in the best possible shape. I’m delighted to have my horse in the form he is in at the moment.”

Taking on the unbeaten Shishkin will be very hard as the favourite is Nicky Henderson banker of the Cheltenham Festival.

Protektorat (Cheltenham Gold Cup)

Protektorat routed his rivals at Aintree last time and is rightly so one of the favourites for the Gold Cup at Cheltenham on Friday.

Dan Skelton is excited for Protektorat as feels the Gold Cup is very open and he has a great chance in the race.

“I’m very happy with where our horses are. Protektorat worked this morning and went nicely. I feel it’s a very open Gold Cup. I’m delighted to have my horse in the form he is in at the moment.”

This could be one of the biggest chances for British trained horse to take one of the major trophies this year.

The main danger could come from the Gordon Elliot Cheltenham fancy in Galvin who has been heavily tipped to run a big race.

Nurse Susan (Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle)

Nurse Susan is a big imposing mare who has impressed with her three runs.

Dan Skelton thinks she is an improving mare and recently quoted this on his stable tour.

“The last three weeks she has blossomed. I think it is a very open race and I don’t think there is anything that has been winning at amazing distances in Ireland at a high level that is particularly frightening. She is very good and I think she will only improve as her career goes forward. I think she has got it all.”

The advice could include which horses are seen to be ahead of the handicapper on the official ratings if running in handicap races at Cheltenham.

The trainer quotes is a good source to find any hints on any knocks, injuries or setbacks during the work from home training on the gallops.

Listening to the trainer’s thoughts on which races they are preferring the horse to go for is important for ante-post betting markets.

Jockey Feedback

Previous jockeys who have ridden the horses sometimes provide quotes and inside information on how the horse will perform at Cheltenham.

Will the horse like the ground conditions?

Will the horse like the stiff uphill finish at Cheltenham Racecourse?

The jockey’s feedback is very important to understanding more on how the selection will perform at Prestbury Park festival.

Listening to the jockey’s feedback on the horses is important because being in the saddle and riding the horse they will know exactly what horse they had under them and if there was more in the tank than met the eye in some races.
