Who Won the 2026 Grand National?

I Am Maximus won the 2026 Grand National at Aintree on Saturday 11 April.

Paul Townend rode the Willie Mullins-trained horse, who started the 9/2 favourite and carried 11st 12lb.

Iroko finished second, with Jordans third and Johnnywho fourth.

The victory made I Am Maximus the first horse since Red Rum to regain the Grand National title after winning it in an earlier year. Red Rum won in 1973, 1974 and 1977, while I Am Maximus won in 2024 and 2026.

Who Won the 2021 Grand National?

Minella Times won the 2021 Grand National at 11/1.

Rachael Blackmore rode the Henry de Bromhead-trained horse and became the first female jockey to win the race.

Minella Times carried 10st 3lb and defeated Balko Des Flos, with Any Second Now finishing third.

The result was a landmark in Grand National history and followed Blackmore’s leading-jockey performance at the Cheltenham Festival earlier that spring.

Why Was There No Grand National in 2020?

The 2020 Grand National was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

An officially sanctioned virtual Grand National was broadcast instead, but its result is not part of the race’s official winners record.

Tiger Roll had won the two previous renewals in 2018 and 2019. The cancellation prevented him from attempting a third consecutive victory in 2020.

Tiger Roll: Back-to-Back Grand National Winner

Tiger Roll won the Grand National in 2018 and 2019 for trainer Gordon Elliott and jockey Davy Russell.

He carried 10st 13lb in 2018 and 11st 5lb in 2019.

His second victory made him the first horse since Red Rum in 1974 to win consecutive Grand Nationals.

Tiger Roll’s achievements extended beyond Aintree. He also won five races at the Cheltenham Festival, including three consecutive Cross Country Chases.

Poethlyn’s 1918 victory came in the wartime substitute race at Gatwick, rather than the normal Aintree Grand National. His 1919 Aintree victory is part of the official Grand National record, so historical lists may distinguish his wartime success when counting repeat winners.

Red Rum is the only horse to have won three official Grand Nationals at Aintree.

Red Rum: The Most Successful Grand National Horse

Red Rum won the Grand National in 1973, 1974 and 1977.

He also finished second in 1975 and 1976, giving him a remarkable sequence of five consecutive first- or second-place finishes.

Ginger McCain trained Red Rum, whose achievements made him one of the most recognisable racehorses in Britain.

His first victory in 1973 came when he caught the long-time leader Crisp on the run-in.

Aldaniti and Bob Champion in 1981

Aldaniti’s 1981 Grand National victory became one of the race’s best-known stories.

Bob Champion returned to riding after treatment for cancer, while Aldaniti had recovered from serious leg injuries.

Their victory was later portrayed in the film Champions.

Foinavon in 1967

Foinavon won the 1967 Grand National at 100/1.

A major incident at the fence now named after him disrupted much of the field on the second circuit.

Foinavon avoided the trouble and went on to win.

Devon Loch in 1956

Devon Loch appeared to be on course to win the 1956 Grand National for the Queen Mother.

The Lamb won in 1868 and 1871, Nicolaus Silver won in 1961 and Neptune Collonges won in 2012.

Neptune Collonges defeated Sunnyhillboy by a nose in one of the closest finishes in Grand National history.

Yes. Twelve-year-old winners include Little Polveir in 1989, Royal Athlete in 1995 and Amberleigh House in 2004.

Red Rum was also 12 when he won his third Grand National in 1977.

Age is one factor to consider when assessing a runner, but it should be examined alongside the horse’s current form, stamina, jumping and handicap weight.
