Famous Nickel Coin Mares Standard Open NH Flat Race Winners
The race is named after the 1951 Grand National winner who is also the most recent mare to win the big race.
It was first run in 2005 with victory going to Alan King’s Senorita Rumbalita, ridden by Robert Thornton.
King also won it in 2019 with The Glancing Queen, this time with Wayne Hutchinson aboard.
Nicky Henderson always has some promising mares for this type of event and won it for the first time with Carole’s Legacy in 2008. He struck again in 2016 with Kayf Grace.
Hollies Pearl was another highly rated winner in 2015, trained by Peter Bowen and ridden by Sean Bowen.
The 2022 renewal was won by Ashroe Diamond, a first victory in the race for trainer Willie Mullins.
Key Nickel Coin Mares Standard Open NH Flat Race Trials
There are no obvious trials for this race which, by nature, attracts inexperienced mares.
All but one of the last eleven winners had already chalked up one or more victories and all had raced at least twice.
None of them had won at Grade 1 to 3 level prior to running at Aintree.
Nickel Coin Mares Standard Open NH Flat Race Betting Trends
This has always attracted a large field with the smallest in the last eleven seasons being 15 runners in the 2021 renewal.
With very few form lines to go on, it is not surprising that only two favourites have prevailed during that period; Getaway Katie Mai (2018) at 15-8 and Ashroe Diamond (2022) at 9-4.
The longest priced winner during that spell was Avispa (2014) at 25-1 while Tempest River (2011) won at 20-1.
There have also been three recent 14-1 winners; Kayf Grace (2016), Dame Rose (2017) and Me Too Please (2021).
Five-year-olds have accounted for over half of the winners since the race was first run in 2005.
Nickel Coin Mares Standard Open NH Flat Race – Top Trainers and Jockeys
Alan King leads the trainer stats for this event with three winners. He trained inaugural winner Senorita Rumbalita and has since scored with Avispa (2014) and The Glancing Queen (2019).
Peter Bowen and Nicky Henderson have trained two winners apiece.
Ruby Walsh won the race aboard Rhacophorus (2006) and Candy Creek (2009). He shares the lead in the jockey standings with Robert Thornton, successful on Senorita Rumbalita (2005) and Avispa (2014).
Betting on the Nickel Coin Mares Standard Open NH Flat Race
The Nickel Coin Mares Standard Open NH Flat race has proved tricky for punters.
That trend looks likely to continue, although it could be significant that Willie Mullins added his name to the roll of honour for the first time in 2022.
