How Many Places Pay Out in Grand National

How Many Places Pay Out in the Grand National?

The standard each-way terms for the Grand National are four places at one-quarter of the win odds. Bookmakers often offer extra places for the race, but the number of places, place fraction and qualifying conditions vary.

The Grand National is a handicap with a maximum field of 34 runners. Its large field makes each-way betting popular, particularly among people backing horses at bigger prices.

A bookmaker offering six places gives your selection two additional finishing positions in which the place part of an each-way bet can return money. However, six places at one-fifth of the odds is not the same as six places at one-quarter of the odds.

The number of places is only half the comparison. The odds, place fraction and any conditions attached to the offer determine what your bet can return.

How Many Places Do Bookmakers Pay on the Grand National?

The standard terms for a handicap with 16 or more runners are four places at one-quarter of the win odds.

Grand National promotions can extend the payout to five, six, seven or more places. These enhanced terms are bookmaker-specific and can change from one year to the next.

The 2026 Grand National has already taken place. The next raceโ€™s promotional terms should not be treated as confirmed until bookmakers publish them.

Grand National Each-Way Places by Bookmaker

Grand National place offers should be checked against the bookmakerโ€™s current race market. A promotion advertised for a previous Grand National does not establish the terms for the next race.

The following bookmakers are relevant to compare when their Grand National markets and offers become available.

Do not assume the same number of places applies to every customer, market or bet type. Check the terms shown on the bet slip before confirming the wager.

An ante-post market may have different terms from the final day-of-race market. Some enhanced offers apply only to bets placed within a specified period or to a particular each-way market.

Our horse racing betting sites comparison covers the broader factors to consider when choosing a bookmaker, while this page concentrates on Grand National place payouts.

What Are the Standard Grand National Each-Way Terms?

The Grand National is a handicap. With at least 16 runners, the conventional each-way terms are:

First four places at one-quarter of the win odds.

For example, a horse backed at 20/1 has place odds of 5/1 when the fraction is one-quarter.

If that horse finishes fourth under standard four-place terms, the place part of the bet wins and the win part loses.

The standard place terms for other race sizes are:

Race Type and Number of RunnersStandard PlacesPlace Fraction
2โ€“4 runnersWin onlyNone
5โ€“7 runners21/4
Handicap, 8โ€“11 runners31/5
Handicap, 12โ€“15 runners31/4
Handicap, 16 or more runners41/4
Non-handicap, 8 or more runners31/5

Bookmakers can advertise enhanced terms that differ from these standard arrangements.

For the full explanation of win and place stakes, read our each-way betting guide.

How Does an Each-Way Bet Work in the Grand National?

An each-way bet consists of two equal stakes:

  • A win bet, which requires your horse to finish first.
  • A place bet, which requires your horse to finish within the bookmakerโ€™s advertised place positions.

A ยฃ10 each-way bet costs ยฃ20 in total.

If the horse wins, both parts of the bet return money.

If the horse finishes within the advertised places but does not win, only the place part returns money.

If the horse finishes outside the advertised places, both stakes lose, subject to any separate promotion or applicable settlement rule.

Example: ยฃ10 Each-Way at 20/1

Suppose you back a horse at 20/1 with six places at one-fifth of the odds.

Your total stake is ยฃ20.

The place odds are 4/1.

If the horse finishes fifth:

Bet PartResultReturn
ยฃ10 winLosesยฃ0
ยฃ10 place at 4/1Winsยฃ50
Totalยฃ50

The ยฃ50 return includes the ยฃ10 place stake. After deducting the original ยฃ20 total stake, the bet makes a ยฃ30 profit.

Under standard four-place terms, the same fifth-place finish would return nothing.

That is the practical value of an extra-place offer.

Are Six Places Better Than Four Places?

Six places cover two additional finishing positions, but that does not automatically make every six-place bet better value.

The bookmaker may offer a shorter win price or a smaller place fraction.

Compare the complete terms rather than the number of places alone.

Consider two offers on the same horse:

Bookmaker ABookmaker B
Win odds20/116/1
Places46
Place fraction1/41/5
Place odds5/116/5

Bookmaker A offers a larger return if the horse finishes in the first four.

Bookmaker B covers fifth and sixth as well, but its place return is smaller.

The difference matters most when assessing the horseโ€™s likely finishing range and the value of the available odds.

A horse with a strong chance of finishing in the first four may be more attractive at the bigger price. A horse whose realistic chance is concentrated around fifth or sixth can make the additional places more relevant.

Neither offer should be assessed without the horseโ€™s price and the bookmakerโ€™s conditions.

One-Quarter Versus One-Fifth Each-Way Odds

The place fraction determines the odds paid on the place part of your bet.

At 20/1:

  • One-quarter of the odds gives place odds of 5/1.
  • One-fifth of the odds gives place odds of 4/1.

With a ยฃ10 place stake, the respective returns are ยฃ60 and ยฃ50, including the stake.

That ยฃ10 difference applies even when both bookmakers pay the same number of places.

For a horse at 10/1, one-quarter of the odds produces place odds of 5/2, while one-fifth produces place odds of 2/1.

The place fraction becomes particularly important when comparing longer-priced horses, because the difference in the potential return increases with the win odds.

Use our bet calculator to work out returns for different odds, stakes and place fractions.

How Many Places Paid Out in the 2026 Grand National?

The 2026 Grand National took place in April. Bookmakers advertised different enhanced each-way terms for the race, with six places at one-fifth of the odds among the offers available.

Those offers were specific to the 2026 race. They should not be presented as the confirmed terms for a future Grand National.

The useful comparison for the next race is the current number of places, fraction, win odds and eligibility conditions displayed by each bookmaker.

How Many Runners Are in the Grand National?

The Grand National has a maximum field of 34 runners.

The final field can be smaller if horses are withdrawn. The declared runners, reserves and late non-runners should be checked against the official race information.

A large field is one reason bookmakers offer enhanced place terms, but the number of runners does not mean every bookmaker must pay more than the standard four places.

Our Grand National runners and riders page covers the declared field, while the Grand National weights page explains the handicap.

What Happens to Grand National Places When There Are Non-Runners?

A non-runner can affect the conditions attached to an enhanced each-way offer.

For example, a bookmaker might advertise six places provided a minimum number of horses start. If withdrawals take the field below that threshold, the offer may change according to its published terms.

Other bookmakers may preserve the original advertised terms for qualifying bets placed before the withdrawals.

There is no reason to assume every bookmaker treats the situation identically.

Before betting, check:

  • The minimum number of runners required for the offer.
  • Whether the place terms are fixed when the bet is accepted.
  • What happens if the final field is smaller.
  • Whether the offer applies to ante-post bets.
  • Whether any additional conditions apply to the enhanced market.

Our todayโ€™s horse racing non-runners page explains how withdrawals can affect the market and bet settlement.

Can Non-Runners Reduce the Standard Four Places?

The Grand Nationalโ€™s normal field is well above the 16-runner threshold for standard four-place handicap terms.

An unusual reduction in the field would need to be assessed against the actual number of runners and the bookmakerโ€™s published settlement rules.

The important distinction is between standard each-way terms and a promotional offer that has its own minimum-runner condition.

Does Rule 4 Apply to Grand National Each-Way Bets?

A Rule 4 deduction can apply when a horse is withdrawn after a bet has been placed.

The deduction adjusts eligible winnings on the remaining runners because the withdrawal changes the betting market.

It can affect the win and place winnings on an each-way bet, depending on the circumstances and applicable rules.

For example, you may have backed a horse at 16/1 before a prominent rival was withdrawn. Your horse can subsequently finish in the places, but the return may be lower than the original odds suggested if a relevant deduction applies.

Rule 4 is separate from the number of places offered.

A bookmaker paying six places does not necessarily mean your original odds will be paid without a deduction after a qualifying withdrawal.

See our Rule 4 deductions explanation for the deduction table and worked examples.

Do Grand National Ante-Post Bets Pay the Same Places?

Not necessarily.

Ante-post betting takes place before the final field is declared. Bookmakers can offer different place terms at different stages of the market.

A horse backed early may have a different each-way arrangement from one backed on the morning of the race.

Traditional ante-post bets also carry non-runner risk. If your horse does not run, the stake can be lost unless the relevant market includes Non-Runner No Bet or another applicable concession.

An enhanced place promotion advertised close to the race should not be assumed to apply retrospectively to an earlier bet.

Check the terms attached to your bet when it was accepted.

What Does Non-Runner No Bet Mean for the Grand National?

Non-Runner No Bet, or NRNB, means that an eligible bet is void if the selected horse does not run, with the relevant stake returned.

It can remove the normal non-runner risk associated with traditional ante-post betting.

NRNB does not automatically guarantee the same place terms as a later promotional market.

A bookmaker can offer NRNB at one stage and enhanced each-way places at another.

The terms displayed when the bet is placed determine what applies.

Our Non-Runner No Bet page explains the distinction in more detail.

Does Best Odds Guaranteed Apply to Grand National Extra Places?

Best Odds Guaranteed, or BOG, is a separate concession from enhanced each-way places.

Under qualifying BOG terms, a winning selection can be settled at the bigger of the price taken and the starting price.

However, enhanced each-way markets can have different eligibility conditions.

Some bookmakers exclude adjusted each-way products or other special markets from BOG. Others specify which parts of an eligible bet qualify.

Do not assume an extra-place offer includes BOG simply because the bookmaker offers BOG on its standard racing market.

Check the Best Odds Guaranteed terms and the conditions attached to the specific Grand National market.

What Is bet365 Each Way Extra?

bet365โ€™s Each Way Extra allows customers to select alternative place terms on eligible horse-racing markets.

Changing the number of places can also change the available win odds.

That makes it different from a straightforward promotion that adds places while retaining the standard market price.

For the Grand National, compare any available Each Way Extra alternatives with the ordinary each-way market and any separately advertised promotion.

Check the odds, fraction, places and eligibility conditions on the actual bet slip.

The bet365 horse racing page covers its wider racing features.

Should You Back a Grand National Horse Each-Way?

An each-way bet can be useful when the place price and the horseโ€™s chance of finishing in the paid positions justify the total stake.

It is not automatically the right bet simply because the Grand National has a large field.

The win and place parts are separate bets. A horse can finish in the places and still produce an overall loss if the place return is smaller than the total each-way stake.

For example, a ยฃ10 each-way bet costs ยฃ20. If the place part returns only ยฃ15 and the win part loses, the overall result is a ยฃ5 loss.

The headline phrase โ€œplacedโ€ does not always mean the bet made a profit.

How to Compare Grand National Each-Way Offers

Start with the horse and the race rather than the promotion.

A horseโ€™s jumping, stamina, handicap mark, ground preference and ability to handle a large field matter more than an additional place if it has little realistic chance of completing the race competitively.

Once you have assessed the horse, compare the available markets.

Check the Win Odds

A bigger place offer may come with a shorter win price.

Check the Place Fraction

One-quarter and one-fifth terms produce different returns.

Check the Number of Places

Work out which finishing positions are covered.

Check the Total Stake

A ยฃ10 each-way bet costs ยฃ20, not ยฃ10.

Check the Non-Runner Terms

Ante-post and day-of-race markets can settle differently.

Check Rule 4 and Other Conditions

Understand how withdrawals and promotional restrictions can affect the return.

Grand National Each-Way Places FAQs

How many places pay out in the Grand National?

The standard each-way terms are four places at one-quarter of the win odds. Bookmakers can offer additional places through promotions or alternative each-way markets.

Do all bookmakers pay six places on the Grand National?

No. Bookmakers set their own enhanced offers, and the terms can differ by race year, market and customer eligibility.

What happens if my horse finishes fifth?

The place part of your bet wins only if the terms attached to your bet cover fifth place. A standard four-place bet would not pay for a fifth-place finish.

What happens if my horse finishes sixth?

A sixth-place finish qualifies for the place part only when your bet covers at least six places, subject to the bookmakerโ€™s conditions and official result.

Is six places at one-fifth better than four places at one-quarter?

Six places cover two additional finishing positions, but one-quarter terms pay a larger place return at the same win odds. Compare the full bet rather than the place count alone.

How much does a ยฃ5 each-way Grand National bet cost?

It costs ยฃ10 in total: ยฃ5 on the horse to win and ยฃ5 on the horse to place.

Does an each-way bet pay if the horse wins?

Yes. If your horse wins, both the win and place parts of a conventional each-way bet return money.

Can I get a place return if my horse falls?

No. A horse that falls and does not finish in an eligible paid position does not qualify for the place part of a conventional each-way bet.

Do non-runners change the number of places?

They can affect enhanced promotions, particularly those with minimum-runner conditions. Check the bookmakerโ€™s rules for the bet you placed.

Are extra places available on ante-post Grand National bets?

They can be, but they are not automatic. The terms attached to the ante-post market determine the places paid and what happens if your horse does not run.

Does Rule 4 affect an each-way place return?

A qualifying withdrawal can lead to a deduction from eligible winnings, including place winnings, under the applicable settlement rules.

When are the next Grand National extra-place offers confirmed?

Bookmakers publish their own offers at different times. Check the current race market and full promotional terms rather than relying on an offer from a previous year.

Summary

The Grand Nationalโ€™s standard each-way terms are four places at one-quarter of the win odds. Enhanced offers can extend the payout to additional finishing positions, but the fraction, win odds, and conditions determine the value of the bet.

A six-place offer can turn a fifth- or sixth-place finish into a return that standard four-place terms would not provide. It can also pay less for a top-four finish if the available odds or place fraction are shorter.

Compare the full terms before betting and check them again if non-runners change the field. For bookmaker offers beyond the Grand National, see our extra-place betting sites comparison.
