Famous Hambleton Stakes Winners

The Hambleton Stakes is one of the most competitive mile handicaps of the flat racing season. It was formerly run with Listed status prior to BHA rule change, removing all handicap races from listed or Group race level.

True Panache won here in 1989 for Jeremy Tree and Pat Eddery. He gained his biggest career victory in the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot. Popular handicappers Mellottie (1991) and Band On The Run (1992) both picked up this valuable prize. There have also been some high-class winners, none more so than Soviet Line (1994), trained by Michael Stoute and ridden by Walter Swinburn. He won the Hong Kong Bowl in 1994 and the Lockinge Stakes in 1995 and 1996. He then raced in the United States and was successful in several major handicaps.

The only dual winner of the Hambleton Stakes was Navajo Chief for Trainer Alan Jarvis in 2013 and 2014.

Here Comes When won here as a seven-year-old for Andrew Balding and later that season sprang a surprise in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood.

Key Hambleton Stakes Trials

The Hambleton Stakes usually attracts exposed handicappers that have featured in races like the Lincoln and the Cambridgeshire.

It is also on the radar for improving four-year-olds.

The winners of this race often have the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot on their agenda while several have gone to be competitive in Group race company.

Hambleton Stakes Betting Trends

Favourites have a poor recent record in this race.

Always Smile (2016) managed to win as the 8-1 co-favourite for Saeed bin Suroor but he is the only market leader to prevail in the last nine seasons.

Alfred Hutchinson (2015) was the longest-priced winner during that time at 20-1 while Navajo Chief returned at 12-1 and 15-2 for his two victories.

There have been some well-supported winners including Afaak (2018) at 9-2 and Kynren (2021) at 15-2.

There has been no obvious age bias with horses winning from ages four to seven in recent seasons.

Quito (2005) was the oldest winner to date at the age of eight.

Hambleton Stakes – Top Trainers and Jockeys

There has been a wide spread of winning trainers and jockeys in the Hambleton Stakes.

Among those on the two-winner mark are Sir Michael Stoute, Saeed bin Suroor and Alan Jarvis.

The last twenty renewals have been won by different jockeys. Dual-winning jockeys include Richard Hills, Pat Eddery and Frankie Dettori.

Betting on the Hambleton Stakes

The Hambleton Stakes is a very competitive handicap and has proved particularly difficult for punters in recent seasons.

It can produce the occasional Group horse but more typically provides clues to the big mile handicaps later in the summer, notably the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot.
